Adelaide Crows great Brett Burton has been named the AFL club's new head of football, replacing David Noble who has moved to the Brisbane Lions.

The Crows said Burton was the "stand-out candidate" in its selection process.

The 38-year-old former forward returned to the Crows a year ago as general manager of high performance, after he played 177 AFL games between 1999 and 2010.

Since his playing days ended, he had worked in administrative and high performance roles with Brisbane and served as president of the AFL Players Association.

Burton remains a member of the league's laws of the game committee.

"The industry is embarking on an exciting period and I feel privileged to have such an expansive role, which offers both rewards and challenges," he said.

"It is an advantage to have already worked closely with the coaches, players and staff and we want our systems and programs to be at the forefront of elite sport."

Crows chief executive Andrew Fagan said Burton was a "strategic and innovative thinker".

"We worked our way through a long and talented list of prospective candidates from across the AFL and beyond and, quite simply, Brett presented himself as a compelling option for the role," Fagan said.

"He is widely regarded as having the attributes to be one of the industry's leading football administrators."

Matt Hass is leaving the Brisbane Lions to join the Crows and take on the role Burton is vacating.
