AUSTRALIAN STATISTICAL GEOGRAPHY STANDARD (ASGS) CORRESPONDENCES

The ABS makes available an extensive range of correspondences to assist with the implementation of the Australian Statistical Standard Geography (ASGS).

Correspondences mathematically reassign data from one geographic region to another. Under the ASGS a new method for building correspondences has been developed. This new method creates more accurate correspondences than previously. As most ABS data relates to population, standard correspondences have a weighting calculated using Mesh Block population data from the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. Correspondences based on area or other variables are available on request.

For more information on the use of correspondences please refer to:

Information Paper: Converting Data to the Australian Statistical Geography Standard, 2012 (cat. no. 1216.0.55.004).

Several correspondences are available through the online publication:

Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Correspondences, July 2011 (cat. no. 1270.0.55.006).

The table below represents correspondences available for free. Other correspondences, including area weighted correspondences, will be generated on request and may attract a fee.

The ABS will not release correspondences it considers unfit for any reasonable purpose. The ABS will not release correspondences for non-ASGS regions, unless there is an ABS business case for their supply.

How to access correspondences

Standard correspondences, coding indexes and allocation tables are available either from the ABS website or, by emailing: geography@abs.gov.au

The ABS Privacy Policy outlines how the ABS will handle any personal information that you provide to us.

Explanations on the differences between correspondences, coding indexes and allocation tables, are provided on the website: Converting Data to the ASGS

AUSTRALIAN STANDARD GEOGRAPHICAL CLASSIFICATION (ASGC) CORRESPONDENCES

The ASGC correspondences used two methods of calculation to produce two types of correspondence files:
  • population based correspondences, based on population of whole Census Collection Districts
  • area based correspondences, based on overlapping area.

The population weighted calculations express the percentage of the “From” area’s population contained within the “To” area. The area based calculation expresses the percentage of the “From” area contained within the “To” area.
