B.C. Camplight

BC Camplight (formerly B.C. Camplight) is the moniker of American songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Brian Christinzio. His 2005 album Hide, Run Away was released by One Little Indian and featured Cynthia G. Mason on vocals. Camplight's follow up, Blink of a Nihilist, was released in 2007. The third album came out in January 2015 on Bella Union. Christinzio's later lyrics regularly explore his personal life and self-destructive tendencies, including struggles with depression and dealing with drugs and alcohol abuse.

Biography

Originally from New Jersey, Christinzio relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in 2003. He soon signed a record deal with One Little Indian and established himself on the city's live music scene. He played live with members of The War on Drugs and as a piano session player appeared on Sharon Van Etten's 2011 album "Epic" among other collaborations.

On the One Little Indian label, Christinzio released two albums, in 2005 and 2007. They were critically well received, but did not succeed commercially. He was dropped by the label and nearly quit music altogether while struggling with mental health issues, drugs and alcohol, to the point of feeling he was near death.

Machel Montano

Machel Jesus Montano (born 24 November 1974) is a Trinidadian soca singer, record producer and songwriter.

He is the front-man of the soca band The HD Family, and is noted for his high energy, fast-paced, and often unpredictable on-stage performances. During his career, which spans more than 30 years, he has recorded several songs alongside many popular acts, such as Lerone Guy of St Anthony's College, Alison Hinds, Beenie Man, Calypso Rose, Burning Flames, Wyclef Jean, Canibus, Red Rat, Shaggy, Sparrow, Denise Belfon, Ken Marlon Charles (KMC), Destra, Walker Hornung, Vybz Kartel, Mohombi, G-Unit, Black Stalin, David Rudder, Buju Banton, Mr. Vegas, Doug E. Fresh, Pitbull, Ariana Grande, Busta Rhymes, Drupatee Ramgoonai and many others. In 1987 he was the youngest finalist to ever win the Caribbean Song Festival. He now stands as one of the most well-known soca acts in the world, using his leverage as an artist able to sell out shows. Recently he has moved to the Los Angeles area and furthered his pursuit, saying: "I may not be the one to bring it forth, but in the meantime, I have a lot of work to do in order for something to happen." He is very well known in New York, where he has had sold out concerts in Madison Square Garden many times over.

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua Guatemala (Spanish pronunciation: [anˈtiɣwa ɣwateˈmala]) (commonly referred to as just Antigua or la Antigua) is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala famous for its well-preserved Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture as well as a number of ruins of colonial churches. It served as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Antigua Guatemala serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. It also serves as the departmental capital of Sacatepéquez Department.

Population

The city had a peak population of some 60,000 in the 1770s; the bulk of the population moved away in the late 18th century. Despite significant population growth in the late 20th century, the city had only reached half that number by the 1990s. According to the 2007 census, the city has some 34,685 inhabitants.

History

Antigua Guatemala means "Ancient Guatemala" and was the third capital of Guatemala. The first capital of Guatemala was founded on the site of a Kakchikel-Maya city, now called Iximche, on Monday, July 25, 1524—the day of Saint James—and therefore named Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Goathemalan (City of Saint James of the Knights of Guatemala). Naturally, St. James became the patron saint of the city.

Burning Flames

Burning Flames are an Antiguan soca band from St. John. Their music is influenced by calypso, reggae, ragga, funk, and zouk.

Biography

The band formed in St. John in 1984. The original lineup included three brothers — Toriana "King Onyan" Edwards (vocals, guitar), David "Bubb-I" Edwards (vocals, bass), and Clarence "Oungku" Edwards (vocals, keyboards) — along with drummer Rone "Foxx" Watkins. The three brothers had previously worked together as buskers, and Clarence and Toriana played in Arrow's backing band. The band appeared at the Antiguan Road March carnival in 1985 with their song "Stiley Tight", which was issued as their debut single in 1986. They went on to have international success in 1989 with "Workey Workey", which was also later covered by Byron Lee & the Dragonaires.

The band signed for Mango Records in 1991, releasing the album Dig.

They won the Road March title on five occasions between 1991 and 1996, and in 1997 Toriana Edwards embarked on a solo career as King Onyan, going on to win four Calypso Monarch titles, eventually leaving the band.
