Jan this is a fabulous piece, thank you. I’m about to launch an educational group program for women with a spiritual perspective who feel 2016 has left them questioning their beliefs and effectiveness. Your article had a surprising and very welcome cross-over to my work.

I had an argument last week with someone who supports Hanson. He accused ‘all you lefties’ of being too idealistic and avoiding reality. He spends time in Europe and has seen the refugee problems first hand in France and Germany. As I saw it, he was looking at the worst of things and extrapolating the evidence to even more devestation. I was accepting those terrible truths but not allowing them to completely define the reality. It seemed to me that he was terribly scared and couldn’t understand why I was more upbeat, allowing some of the good things into our frame.

So I was intrigued by how persuasive ‘expert’ opinions of doctors and farmers could mitigate against the lefty-loony framing. I think perhaps it helps people feel someone is in charge, in control. Real people, people they recognise as being effective, are ‘on the job’. Great insight.

Well, the majority of Australians are persuaded on climate change – and marriage equality too.

A good book on organising social movements, thankfully by an Australian, is Les Robinson’s Changeology.

Don’t include me in that ‘some of us’. What we see today has always been the real Turnbull. An over-hyped, self-promoting fool who has always said whatever he had to say to get whatever he wanted. He has always been a sham.
