The incorrect announcement that La La Land had won the top honour at the 89th Academy Awards shocked millions of people around the world on Monday, with numerous viewers labelling the incident the "most awkward" blunder in Oscars history.
The presenters for Best Picture, Hollywood veterans Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, read out the wrong winner while addressing the star-studded crowd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

Oscars mix-up: La La Land producer, Emma Stone react
The 87th Academy Awards end with a major bungle as La La Land is wrongly announced as winning best picture instead of Moonlight. Vision courtesy A.M.P.A.S.
Dunaway declared La La Land the winner, when in fact Moonlight had snapped up Best Picture. Co-presenter Beatty had to awkwardly return to the stage to correct the mistake during the middle of La La Land's acceptance speech.
"I opened the envelope," he said. "And it said Emma Stone, La La Land. That's why I took such a long look at Faye and at you. I wasn't trying to be funny."
La La Land's producer Jordan Horowitz held aloft the correct award slip for the cameras to prove that Moonlight had indeed won.
"This is not a joke," he said. "Moonlight has won best picture."
He and his team then hurriedly left the stage.
The blunder was broadcast live to millions of viewers around the world, with many taking to social media to brand the mishap the "most awkward" Oscars blunder of all time.
That was simultaneously the most hilarious, awkward, painful, amazing thing I've ever seen. I will never forget it. #Moonlight #Oscars

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel took the blooper in his stride, signing off by joking he knew he would "screw this show up".
"I blame myself for this," he said. "Remember, it's just an awards show. I mean, we hate to see see people disappointed. But the good news is we got to see some extra speeches."
Meanwhile, Barry Jenkins, who wrote and directed Moonlight, has taken to Twitter to say he is "still speechless" after the surprise win.

La La Land's Emma Stone, meanwhile, told reporters backstage that she was holding her Best Actress card the whole time – so was unsure of how La La Land got incorrectly announced as Best Picture.
Confusion aside, the Oscar-winning actress said she was extremely excited for Moonlight and thought it one of the best films of all time.
Here are some of the best celebrity reactions to the blunder being shared on Twitter:
