Howard E. Barker (born 28 June 1946) is a British playwright.
Barker has coined the term "Theatre of Catastrophe" to describe his work. His plays often explore violence, sexuality, the desire for power, and human motivation.
Rejecting the widespread notion that an audience should share a single response to the events onstage, Barker works to fragment response, forcing each viewer to wrestle with the play alone. "We must overcome the urge to do things in unison" he writes. "To chant together, to hum banal tunes together, is not collectivity." Where other playwrights might clarify a scene, Barker seeks to render it more complex, ambiguous, and unstable.
Only through a tragic renaissance, Barker argues, will beauty and poetry return to the stage. "Tragedy liberates language from banality" he asserts. "It returns poetry to speech."
Barker frequently turns to historical events for inspiration. His play Scenes from an Execution, for example, centers on the aftermath of the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and a fictional female artist commissioned to create a commemorative painting of the Venetian victory over the Ottoman fleet. Scenes from an Execution, originally written for Radio 3 and starring Glenda Jackson in 1984, was later adapted for the stage. The short play Judith revolves around the Biblical story of Judith, the legendary heroine who decapitated the invading general Holofernes.
Barker may refer to:
Howard is a popular English given name originating from Old Norse Hávarðr, which means "high guard". A diminutive is "Howie" and its shortened form is "Ward" (most common in the 19th century). Between 1900-1960, Howard ranked in the U.S. Top 200; between 1960–1990, it ranked in the U.S. Top 400; between 1990–2004, it ranked in the U.S. Top 600. People with the given name Howard or its variants include:
The Wrestling is a nonfiction book by Simon Garfield, a British journalist and non-fiction author. The book charts the rise and fall in popularity of British professional wrestling over the course of the twentieth century.
The book consists almost entirely of interviews with professional wrestlers (or those who knew them), including Mick McManus, Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks, Kendo Nagasaki and female wrestler Klondyke Kate, often giving the appearance of a conversation between the interviewees and the author.
Garfield also interviews those involved in the promotion of professional wrestling, with a particular focus on the decision of LWT chief Greg Dyke to drop the sport from its schedules in 1988.
Professional wrestling has accrued a considerable nomenclature through its long existence. Much of it stems from the industry's origins in the days of carnivals and circuses, and the slang itself is often referred to as "carny talk." In the past, wrestlers used such terms in the presence of fans so as not to reveal the worked nature of the business. In recent years, widespread discussion on the Internet has popularized these terms. Many of the terms refer to the financial aspects of pro wrestling in addition to performance-related terms.

Restitution de l'atelier de la Distillerie Juin 2013 au Comœdia Aubagne. Texte de Howard Barker.
13 Objects by Howard Barker performed by third year drama students at Edge Hill University. Dress run recording 14/12/15.
In 1930, Mrs. Erlynne, who describes herself as poor and infamous, driven from New York society by jealous wives, sees a news photo of wealthy Lord Windermere and his young wife: she heads for the Amalfi Coast to be among the rich and famous for 'the season' and to snare Mr. Windermere. Gossips twitter as he spends his afternoons with her, his wife blissfully innocent as she blushingly fends off attentions from a young English nobleman, an international playboy who thinks he's in love. Mrs. Erlynne is also pursued by a worldly-wise older English nobleman. Mrs. Windermere's 20th birthday party approaches, where all plays out amid numerous amoral Wildean aphorisms. Directed by Mike Barker Written by Oscar Wilde, Howard Himelstein Starring Helen Hunt, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Wilkinson
So I'm sittin here
Guess I'm just another
I won't cry a tear it won't make it better
Can't keep holdin' on
She'll forget about you
But now that your gone have to live without you
I was just another girl to you
You had me beleaving I was your baby
And I was so lucky
But I can't be mad at you
Cause I shouldve known better to give my heart away
Yea yea
To a heart, heart breaker
No more cryin here you just left me broken
You say you don't care so the door is closing
And I'll tell you off but my heart won't even
Cause I want your love but I have to leave it
I was just another girl to you
You had me beleaving I was your baby
And I was so lucky
But I can't be mad at you
Cause I shouldve known better to give my heart away
Yea yea
To a heart, heart breaker
Yous a faker heart breaker
Won't bring me down no more
Gotta show ya I'm alright
Lose these strings and cut you off
Yous a faker heart breaker
Won't bring me down no more
Gotta show ya I'm alright
Lose these strings and cut you off
I was just another girl to you
You had me beleaving I was your baby
And I was so lucky
But I can't be mad at you
Cause I shouldve known better to give my heart away
Yea yea
To a heart, heart breaker
Maybe this is just better that we're gone
You stabbed me in the back
I've been lonely
I don't wanna deal with this anymore
You go on without me
I was just another girl to you
You had me beleaving I was your baby
And I was so lucky
But I can't be mad at you
Cause I shouldve known better to give my heart away
Yea yea
To a heart, heart breaker
I was just another girl to you
You had me beleaving I was your baby
And I was so lucky
But I can't be mad at you
