Welcoming people seeking asylum

Manus Island will close, mystery surrounds the government's refugee agreement with the United States following the election of Donald Trump and during 2016, the Nauru Files have exposed the awful truth of Labor and Liberal’s offshore detention regime.

This is our opportunity to finally offer safety and support to those fleeing desperate situations.

For over a decade, Labor and Liberal have said the best way to save lives is to lock people up. But, we’ve got a bold, new approach that shows there is a better way to welcome those seeking a safe home.

In 2017, we'll show them that there is a Better Way.

The Greens' plan will shut the detention camps on Manus Island and Nauru and abolish the practice of offshore detention. We will give $500 million to assessment and support organisations in our region to speed up the process and give people access to education and work rights while they wait. We will abolish temporary protection visas and provide permanent protection to people seeking safety.

Every person should be treated with dignity and respect. The Greens will introduce a 30 day time limit for people held in on-shore immigration detention. This is ample time to conduct the necessary checks and to assess their claims for asylum.
