At the 89th Academy Awards, the Hollywood musical La La Land (2016) is nominated for 14 statuettes.
Its score, by Justin Hurwitz, is often extravagant and intensely romantic - you can hear highlights in this Screen Sounds programme.
On the other hand, Mica Levi's string-dominant score for Jackie (2016) is mainly intense, and raised particularly high in the audio mix by director Pablo Larrain.
He says of Levi's work: 'She doesn't go the conventional route-she won't play a 'sad' note in a sad scene. She will find an equally evocative emotional tone that adds another layer to the movie. Her sensibility brings another dimension.'
