Dangun Wanggeom or Tangun was the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first ever Korean kingdom, around present-day Liaoning, Manchuria, and the northern part of Korean Peninsula. He is said to be the "grandson of heaven", and to have founded the kingdom in 2333 BC. The earliest recorded version of the Dangun legend appears in the 13th-century Samguk Yusa, which cites China's Book of Wei and Korea's lost historical record Gogi (고기, 古記).
Dangun's ancestry legend begins with his grandfather Hwanin (환인/桓因), the "Lord of Heaven". Hwanin had a son, Hwanung (환웅/桓雄), who yearned to live on the earth among the valleys and the mountains. Hwanin permitted Hwanung and 3,000 followers to descend onto Paektu Mountain, where Hwanung founded the Sinsi (신시/神市, "City of God"). Along with his ministers of clouds, rain and wind, he instituted laws and moral codes and taught humans various arts, medicine, and agriculture. Legend attributes the development of acupuncture and moxibustion to Dangun.
Taekwondo (/ˈtɛˈkwɒnˈdoʊ/) is a Korean martial art. Taekwondo was developed during the 1940s and 1950s by various Korean martial artists combining and incorporating the elements of Karate and Chinese Martial Arts along with combining the indigenous and traditional-based Korean martial arts styles of Taekkyeon, Subak, and Gwonbeop.
The oldest governing body for taekwondo is the Korea Taekwondo Association (KTA), formed in 1976 by a collaborative effort by representatives from the nine original kwans, or martial arts schools, in Korea. The main international organizational bodies for taekwondo today are the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), founded by General Choi Hong Hi in 1966, and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), founded in 1973 by the KTA. Gyeorugi ([kjʌɾuɡi]), a type of full-contact sparring, has been an Olympic event since 1992. The body known for taekwondo in the Olympics is the World Taekwondo Federation.
Beginning in 1947, shortly after the end of the occupation of Korea by Imperial Japan, new martial arts schools called kwans were opened in Seoul. These schools were established by Korean martial artists who had studied primarily in Japan during the Japanese rule. The umbrella term traditional taekwondo typically refers to the martial arts practiced by the kwans during the 1940s and 1950s, though in reality the term "taekwondo" had not yet been coined at that time, and indeed each kwan was practicing their own unique style of martial art. During this timeframe taekwondo was also adopted for use by the South Korean military, which only served to increase its popularity among civilian martial arts schools.

Early on a frigid Saturday morning we ventured off to a 24 hour Korean restaurant specializing in Seolleongtang (설렁탕 - 先農湯) to eat Korean Ox Bone and Brisket soup for breakfast. This winter - more than any other spent in Korea - has been especially bone chilling cold. Although the restaurant seemed like a short distance from Audrey's Korean apartment when we walked by it in the summer, it ended up being a longer trip than we anticipated this time around and we arrived feeling frozen and in need of warm food and drinks. We noticed the restaurant was packed with an array of different dinners; some were hungover Korean men joined at table loudly yelling at one another while other tables included families with their children. Overall, the atmosphere of the restaurant and the heated floors...
Do you know what Dandong Siphun is? Do you know what dori-dori, jaem-jaem means? It's something many Koreans do when trying to soothe a crying baby? Time passes by, yet babies are always babies. Crying isn't an exception. When a baby keeps crying, parents just feel helpless. Nothing seems to work. At such a moment, the best solution is Dandong Siphun, which means 'ten teachings for the children of ancient Korea. Dori-dori causes a baby turn his neck from side to side, developing his neck muscles and motor nerves. Next, Mom shows the baby how to do 'gonji-gonji.' Gonji-gonji aids the baby's blood circulation and improves his manual dexterity. Finally, 'jaem-jaem' develops the strength of his hands evenly, making him able to use even his smallest muscles as he wishes. The baby stops cr...
Walked the world today
Passed the lines of clouded eyes
Go to church and pray
Social farce, no God inside
Open your eyes
You'll realise
In this sea of senseless lies
You live your life...
Politicians say
All the 'truths' we need to hear
Blindly following
Is it faith or is it fear?
Open your mind
Soon you'll find
In a world of compromise
You see the light...
I've gone...
One step beyond the truth
One step beyond the lie
One step beyond the pain
One step beyond...
I see a new day's morning
Arise to face the dawn
One step beyond the dark
One step beyond the light
One step beyond the fear
One step beyond...
I see a new day dawning
We rise to heed the warning call...
Open your eyes
You'll realise
In this sea of senseless lies
