Editorial Reviews

The Compleat Al is the amazing, hilarious, and not-entirely-true story of Weird Al Yankovic, the Grammy award-winning master of musical parody and rock and roll comedy. The mockumentary takes you behind the scenes, beginning with his childhood years, his high school and college days, up through his early-career rise to stardom. This concocted chronicle also contains moments from AL-TV and footage from his trip to Japan, and a somewhat embellished version of how he received permission from Michael Jackson for "Eat It. ",

And to top it off, The Compleat Al contains eight "Weird Al",video classics: "Ricky, ", "I Love Rocky Road, ", the award-winning "Eat It, ", "I Lost on Jeopardy, ", "This Is the Life, ", "Like a Surgeon, ", "One More Minute", and "Dare to Be Stupid. ",

I've been a lifelong Weird Al fan but I had never seen his mock-umentary when it came out but I'm glad I finally did. If you love UHF or just classic Al you will be satisfied and smiling.

I would like to point out that much of what you see here is actually history but you can glean some historical accurate truths about weird Al. Like the fact that he studied architecture (he would've designed some crazy buildings) or that he became a household name through Dr. Demento's radio show. But a lot of the other stuff these to be taken with a grain of salt.

But I will say you do get a good collection of Al's music videos on here. I do love I Lost on Jeopardy.

Thanks for reading!

As this DVD has not yet been released, this is based more on the content.

I bought this on VHS when I was a teenager, and thought it was hilarious! I can't speak for anyone else who may have seen this, but I recently watched it (yes, the old VHS tape), and it was still very entertaining to me...although after almost 30 years, the quality of the video is suffering. I'm not sure how much of 'The Compleat Al' is fact, but there is apparently enough of it to warrant the addition of his home movies, and appearances from his parents. A lot of the references are out of date ("Here's the new video for 'State of Shock' from Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson), and the Al music videos are, obviously, all his earliest stuff. One of the many surprises on this that I always enjoyed was a compilation of his stint on MTV where he took over and renamed it 'ALtv'. I'll look forward to purchasing this DVD when it is released. I'm sure my kids will get a real kick out of it.

After decades long out of print, Shout Factory has finally brought back the classic mockumentary The Compleat Al, chronicling "Weird Al" Yankovic's rise to fame. I'm also happy to say it still holds up remarkably well nearly 30 years later. I always enjoyed watching the old VHS way back in the day, it utilizes Yankovic's unique brand of satire very well, not just in the music videos and Al-TV clips, but also during the staged interviews and reenactments of "true events", including a particularly hysterical moment involving a banjo-wielding punk rocker. The presentation of the DVD is solid, it actually includes both the original CBS/Fox logo as well as the somewhat dated but still hilarious duplication disclaimer crawl at the beginning of the feature. Picture and sound quality are about as good as expected, framed at its original 1.33:1 aspect ratio with 2.0 Dolby Digital, while it may not be a full-blown remaster job, it's still the best looking presentation I've ever seen of it. As a bonus, it includes two home video trailers, not entirely necessary but fun regardless. Highly recommended and absolutely essential for Al fans of all ages!

there is no more cheerfully ruthless predator of rock pomposity, so some might think his own turn was overdue. well, turnabout may indeed be fair play, but let's face it: there's one man, and only one man, on Earth who can handle the job.
(although it could be argued that this "life story" is a bit premature. he'd only been a star a few years and released three albums, after all, but whatever...)
the curious title is a takeoff on The Compleat Beatles, a 1982 documentary film. (narrated by Malcolm McDowell, Compleat was considered the definitive Beatles documentary until the "Fabs" themselves reunited to tell their story personally via The Beatles Anthology.) not that he can resist sampling a few other bits. for instance, there's a scene of a fan showing an interviewer her painting of Al, directly echoing a similar fan's such tribute to Paul McCartney.
it proudly proclaims itself the "almost true" story. for instance, it's tale of his childhood in Lynwood, California (complete with his father's old home movies) is essentially reported as happened, but he wasn't, say, born in the hospital elevator en route to the delivery room as a harbinger of his "rise to the top."
also to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt are the stories of how success went to his head. (lamenters here include Al's band and his parents as themselves.) or the running-gag of photos from his dates, all of which find his escorts covering their faces. contrary to the inherent suggestion here, insider reports to this day steadily paint Al Yankovic as one of the most together artists that either music or comedy have ever seen.

I can't even describe how sad I was to learn that Burgeropolis wasn't really designed by a young Al in architect school. Still, this is an incredibly fun "documentary." Beware of sadness, as it does lovingly discuss Frank and Mary Yankovic, who are no longer living.
