The NFL awarded the Seattle Seahawks two third-round selections Friday in the annual doling out of compensatory draft picks, the system that helps compensate teams who lost major free-agent contributors the previous offseason.

Seattle's two additional selections (Nos. 102 and 106 overall) brings their total number of 2017 draft picks to seven, with five in the first 106 selections. The Seahawks dealt away their 2017 fourth-round pick last year in order to move up to select Maryland defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson in the fifth-round of the 2016 draft. The Seahawks forfeited their 2017 fifth-round pick in September after an NFL investigation found Seattle violated the league's offseason workout rules.

The compensatory selections are determined by a formula that takes into account how many free agents a team loses in a given offseason versus how many they signed. A total of 32 picks are handed out each season, with a maximum of four per team.

Seattle's losses of linebacker Bruce Irvin, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, tackle Russell Okung and guard J.R. Sweezy worked for them in the formula, while the signings of tackles J'Marcus Webb and Bradley Sowell worked against them.

Four teams -- the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs -- received the maximum of four compensatory selections, while the Miami Dolphins netted three. In addition to Seattle, the Los Angeles Rams also earned two. Nine teams received one compensatory selection each.

The Seahawks received three compensatory picks in 2016 and four in 2015. The picks are eligible to be traded for the first time this year.
