PHOTO INTERNSHIPS
SeattlePI.com seeks a self-starting college student for a part-time, photojournalism internship to meet school credit requirements. The internship will run from early June 2016 to early September, although timing is somewhat flexible.
As the internship is unpaid, Washington-local applicants are especially encouraged, as we feel it is unfair to ask out of state individuals to find housing and a part time job to fund the summer. That being said, if you are out of state and do not mind and/or have acquired a scholarship for housing, feel free to apply. We will consider you just as we would anyone else.
The intern is an important part of our photo staff and is treated as equals alongside the staff photographers. Working 15-20 hours per week, interns will cover a myriad of daily assignments in the Seattle metropolitan area and beyond with an emphasis on event coverage and visual storytelling through picture story-styled galleries. Our compact staff of two photographers responds quickly to the ebb and flow of events in the city, using instinct to predict what will be a breaking story and social media to drive content to our readers. Interns may receive help editing and get feedback from two staff photographers, Genna Martin and Grant Hindsley, on a regular basis.
SeattlePI.com gets upwards of four million unique visitors a month with a strong emphasis on use of social media platforms. Our coverage includes major league sports, breaking/spot news, self-driven longer-term picture stories and the feature rich nature of Seattle and surrounding areas.
While we were the nation’s first large metro daily newspaper to go digital only in 2009, our reach, respect and namesake dates to 1863, and the two-person photo staff is highly motivated to produce outstanding visuals on a daily basis. Intern must be highly self-motivated, hungry to make strong pictures, possess desire to learn about a changing photojournalism landscape, be able to take thoughtful criticism and roll with the punches. Both of our staff photographers value the education aspect of the internship and will work to help you learn in a fast moving, innovative environment.
If you are interested in joining our team for the summer, please submit a diverse portfolio, resume, references and cover letter to photographers Grant Hindsley and Genna Martin at the below email addresses. The deadline for applications is April 8, 2016. Thank you! We look forward to hearing from you.

NEWS INTERNSHIPS
As a part-time (15-18 hours a week) news intern at seattlepi.com, with a focus on content creation and social media outreach for The Pot Blog and The Big Science Blog, you will be exposed to and enveloped in the dynamic and trailblazing world of online journalism. You will be expected to work at our newsroom and have a chance to become a big fish in a small pond, working directly with our news producers on breaking news, long-term projects, analysis, photo galleries, historical research and editorial writing primarily for these two blogs. You may also be brought in on breaking news stories outside of these two content areas.
Your work will be considered – and usually used – for placement on the seattlepi.com home page, in addition to the home pages of these two blogs. Experience working with social media, such as Twitter and Facebook, is expected. Familiarity with HTML and WordPress is nice but not required. You must be able to receive college credit for an internship – recently graduated alumni cannot be considered.
We are not currently accepting applications, though we will be accepting applications for a Fall Quarter internship about mid-summer.
