Welcome to Yarborough House
Yarborough House is a large second hand book and record shop and coffee shop. Carol and Jock Wright have run the shop for the last 30 years. It is situated in the Market Square at the top of the small, lively town of Bishops Castle in Shropshire, UK.We make sure that all our books, CDs and LPs are in very good condition and that the stocks change rapidly.
Jock's News
January 2015
Cd stocks are now very good; I now have one of the best ranges of discs I have had. The only weak area is that of late 20th century music. Lp stocks are also good at present but the best items are selling rapidly.
I have been busy reorganising things. My office cum store has been rebuilt so I now have the reserve stock of discs in order . Although we sell only from the shop rather than mail order, I can often find requested CDs in the store. I have increased the number of CDs and now have a small selection of music DVDs. LPs continue, but I am being very selective in what I buy. Things are going well and the cats still welcome customers.
28th April 2013
I was recently visited by a Chinese CD dealer Who wanted only the oldest CDs manufactured in the early 1980s. This was a surprise because I find these to be often of poor quality soundwise and with a tendency to deteriorate.
Most of our stock is from this century or the later half of the 1990s.
18 March 2013
When I last wrote, I noted that we had a very large collection of operas. Since then the balance has been restored by several very good batches of chamber and orchestral discs.
4 February 2013
Because of the snow and ice of the last week or so, the shop has been quieter than usual so I have had time to look through the stocks and have moved things around and reduced the prices of slow moving items.
Opera sets continue to arrive; I now have 14 different Vivaldi operas
11 December 2012 - I now have had such a influx of opera CD sets that I’ve begun to reduce prices of most of these.
21 November 2012 - I’ve just received a large quantity of Lyrita LPs. Years ago, these would have been thought valuable, but now most of them sell for three or four pounds.
13 November 2012 - LP stocks have been recently replenished with a few interesting collections over the last few weeks.
5 November 2012 -
I am often asked why we are not organised for mail order. The reason is that we prefer people to come here and that by avoiding the extra work of keeping lists we can keep our prices low.
22 October 2012 - I always aim to have a range of all kinds of Classical music, but sometimes I have a shortage of one or other area. The opera section has been rather low for some weeks but I have just bought a very large collection with many unusual recordings so that gap is filled for a month or two.
25 September 2012 - I’m busy this week with weeding out the CDs which have been on display for nine months or more. These will be put in the Bargain Box at about half price so the box will be full again.
