Don’t be bullied by the far-right – Organise in self-defence!

Over the last week Victoria Police have spread hysteria about an anti-racism rally planned for this Saturday May 27 in Coburg, a diverse suburb in Melbourne’s inner-north. The police have encouraged locals to stay indoors and traders to close up shop and hide their Halal signage, essentially creating a voluntary curfew so neo-Nazis can march unhindered through the streets of Melbourne.

This is a disgrace and will only embolden the far-right.

The ‘Moreland says “NO” to Racism’ rally was initiated by Moreland socialist Councillor Sue Bolton and has the formal endorsement of the local council, Victorian Trades Hall Council, the Islamic Council of Victoria and No Room for Racism (See the full list of endorsers here).

Over recent years the aggressive anti-Muslim and anti-refugee rhetoric pushed by politicians and the mainstream media has stoked racial tensions in society. Incidents of street harassment are reportedly on the rise, directed mostly at Muslim women and people who appear to be from Middle Eastern backgrounds. The constant fear mongering about terrorism and scapegoating of refugees has opened up space for racists and bigots to thrive.

Far-right groups, made up of white supremacists and neo-Nazis, have jumped on this opportunity to build a violent, anti-Muslim movement in the streets. They have taken inspiration from the growth of far-right groups in Europe and hope to replicate their success here.

After more than a year of failed rallies and factional disputes, the remnants of the far-right anti-Muslim group Reclaim Australia are searching for a reason to remain relevant. The neo-Nazi Hitler-sympathising group United Patriots Front has joined with white supremacist group True Blue Crew to attack the “Moreland says “NO” to Racism” rally on Saturday.

Viewing this as an opportunity to exert more control over who has the right to protest, the police have demanded the anti-racism rally be cancelled! In credit to the organisers, they have refused to back down to the threats of the far-right and insistence of the police. The rally will go ahead, as it should, and we need everybody to come out in defence of it.

To back down to the threats of the far-right would only encourage them further. At the moment they represent only a few dozen violent individuals with a strong ideological commitment to the far-right. But this time last year they were attracting thousands of supporters online and hundreds of people to their rallies. It was only after numerous anti-racist blockades, organised by No Room for Racism and other anti-racism activists, that their numbers began dwindling, demoralisation set in and they began infighting and splintering.

To back down now, and allow the far-right to march through the streets of Coburg, would be a huge mistake. Even the dairy farmers stood up to the United Patriots Front leader when they booed him offstage at their rally this week! This rejection was demoralising for the far-right. Stopping them from marching through Coburg on Saturday would represent another demoralising defeat. Every time they attempt to intimidate our communities or spread their violent brand of Islamophobia in public spaces, we need to mobilse en masse in peaceful yet determined protests to shut them down. Anything less allows them space to grow.

Unfortunately, not everyone will be on their best behaviour on the day. In the past we have witnessed police use force against onlookers and anti-racism protesters while giving neo-Nazis full protection to march down our streets. On occasion, some anti-racists have taken things too far. But this is no reason to retreat and give free reign to the far-right. The more people with discipline and determination to stand up to the far-right who turn up on Saturday, the more likely we will have a positive outcome.

Unfortunately, the Greens have been rattled by the scare campaign and have pulled out of the rally. This is a selfish act that leaves the rest of our community to fight for ourselves. We hope that Greens members will ignore their leaders direction and stand with us on Saturday.

Many of us do not have the luxury to choose to abstain from this battle. We have become targets of the growing far-right because we are Muslim, people of colour, or vocal anti-racists (or all three!). If we stay home on Saturday, we still have to worry about our safety on Sunday, Monday and every day after that.

We are not interested in violence. We want to end the violence already occurring on our streets. But we can’t do that by caving in to threats from the far-right. Our best defence is a mass, peaceful, community defence. That requires large numbers of people to stand with us this Saturday and defend our streets from being taken over by racist thugs. If we don’t stop them now, we will regret it in years to come.

Meet 10am at Coburg Library (Victoria Street Mall, Coburg) for a 11am rally start. See you all there.

Whose streets? Our streets! Whose land? Aboriginal land!

On March 20 refugee families on Nauru staged a protest to coincide with the Palm Sunday marches across Australia. There has been a lot of media attention about the campaign to #LetThemStay, demanding the Australian government not deport the 267 asylum seekers brought to mainland Australia for medical treatment. We must also demand the government process and resettle those currently on Nauru and Manus Island: #BringThemHere and #CloseTheCamps!

Thousands join global day of action for refugees!

Over the past 24 hours tens of thousands of people around the world have marched FOR refugee rights and AGAINST the brutal treatment of those seeking asylum. In major cities across Europe (and beyond!) people joined‪#‎M19‬ marches to oppose ‪#‎FortressEurope‬, in Australia people joined Palm Sunday marches to demand the government ‪#‎LetThemStay‬ and‪#‎BringThemHere‬, and on Nauru refugee families protested the denial of their basic human rights.

It is often said a society should be judged by how it treats those most in need. With an estimated 15 million refugees across the world, our society is not doing too well by this measure. As millions are displaced by war, conflict over natural resources and climate events, those who own and control wealth are getting richer. Shamefully, just 62 people now own the same amount of wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population!

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Defending refugees rights means taking a stand against inequality and working towards an economy where everyone is valued, given an opportunity to contribute and afforded the basics like housing, education and healthcare. This will require building political movements to effect meaningful social change - we need you to get involved!

PM Turnbull confronted by protesters in Melbourne CBD

“Hundreds of pro-refugee protesters marched up to the Lonsdale St Greek Festival where Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten are attending a Greek cultural event.

Many of the protestors made it into the festival and yelled “Let them stay!” as Mr Turnbull and Mr Shorten arrived on stage.” Read full article here

Why is there sympathy for those fleeing Syria but contempt for refugees on Nauru?

The plight of refugees fleeing deadly conflict in the Middle East has generated huge sympathy across the world. In many countries huge demonstrations of ordinary people have demanded governments act to support and resettle these refugees.

In Australia, tens of thousands of people joined demonstrations and vigils to put pressure on the government to accept 12,000 refugees from Syria. This must be seen as a huge victory considering the many years of refugee-bashing we have witnessed in Australian politics. It would not have been possible without public sentiment in support of refugees and significant pressure from below.

On the 10 year anniversary of the Cronulla Riots we should take stock of what we have learned since the day thousands of people fought a race war in a Sydney beachside suburb. The awful event brought to light the underlying racial tensions in this country built on the genocide of Aboriginal people and a consciously racist ‘White Australia’ immigration policy. These tensions have not gone away.

In 2005 it was clear that the riots were racially motivated. The text messages going around specifically targeted “wogs and lebs” and people of colour from many ethnicities and backgrounds became targets. The dominant sentiment amongst the rioters was that Sydney’s beaches were being “invaded” by non-whites who do not belong there.

The language and approach of racists in Australia – from street fighting neo-Nazis to government ministers - has been refined since 2005. The same groups who promoted the Cronulla Riots talk less today about “wogs and lebs” and more about “Muslims and terrorists”. But the attempts of these groups to celebrate and memorialise the Cronulla Riots as “the day ordinary Aussies stood up against the multiculturalism and the Muslim invasion” proves how little has really changed.

Throughout 2015 we have witnessed the racist far-right enjoy a revival, rallying thousands across the country behind a white supremacist anti-Muslim agenda. The societal conditions for this revival have been created by both the open Islamophobia of mainstream politicians and the deteriorating living conditions of many working class people. The responsibility for both lays directly at the feet of politicians.

The attempts by tiny far-right organisations to orchestrate another race riot on the anniversary this weekend will likely fail. But the conditions for further explosive racial confrontations remain. Just ask anyone of Muslim, Middle Eastern, African or South Asian appearance about the rising incidents of racism in public spaces - not least of all coming from government politicians!

It is not enough to sit back and ridicule the crude prejudice of the far-right who are actively directing people’s genuine frustrations into racial and ethnic hatred. Yes, they are still fringe. But their audience has grown enormously in recent years and continues to grow.

Unless we work to actively build a united anti-racist movement that challenges the war mongering, targeted racism and anti-worker policies of the establishment parties, the far-right will continue to grow. Instead of allowing neo-Nazis and white supremacists to direct people’s anger towards Muslims, refugees and remote Aboriginal communities, we must fight to direct that anger to where it belongs: on the political parties responsible for the reduction in our share of Australia’s wealth, the lack of affordable housing, the overcrowding of public healthcare and the inaccessibility of quality education.

We can’t afford to give the far-right the space and room to organise. We need to occupy this space with explanations, answers and solutions – an anti-racist alternative to the divisive politics of both the far-right and the political establishment.

We spent 2015 doing this. We need you to get involved too.
