Adelaide to welcome autumn with heatwave

Craig McIntosh, Sunday February 26, 2017 - 13:05 EDT

After a respite from intense summer heat over the last couple of weeks, Adelaide is set to sizzle once again.

Since February 12th only three days have been warmer than average in the SA capital. The majority of days have actually been well below. As summer turns autumn, a slow moving trough is going to be sending a hot airmass from the interior to the south of SA.

Monday is looking to reach the mid-thirties before an afternoon southerly brings some relief. It will be short-lived, however, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all likely to reach the high thirties. Sea breezes will also be weak, allowing the heat to hang around overnight.

As a result, night-time temperatures are likely to be around 6-7 degrees above average. The abnormally high minimums combined with the hot days warrants a heatwave declaration, and the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a low-intensity heatwave warning for Adelaide and surrounds this week.

Things will gradually start to cool down from next Friday, although it is likely to stay warm next weekend and remain a few degrees above average well into next week.
