The sale whisperer: Melbourne's best shopping February 24-March 3

With autumn just a whisker away, it's time to start thinking about topping up some of those transeasonal pieces for cooler evenings.

Sick of the same old? Well, a bunch of independent Australian labels are getting together for the Magic Designer Sale. There's luxury separates from Kloke, sustainable staples from Kuwaii, and more. Prices for Kuwaii pieces start at $55.

19-21 Johnston Street, Collingwood. Friday 9am-6pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday 11am-4pm.

Gary Bigeni is a contemporary label that flies under the radar much of the time, so a sample sale may be a good introduction to the brand, which is known for its luxurious fabrics in bright colours. Tops from $80, dresses from $180 and jackets from $200.

155 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. March 4-5, Noon-8pm.

Pick up a pop of colour at the Gary Bigeni sale next weekend.

Have you ever wondered what dress rental companies do when dresses go out of style, or decline in popularity? Well, like Glam Corner, they sell them off at bargain prices. Designers include Nicola Finetti, Alex Perry and Wayne Cooper. Dresses that retail for $2500 are selling for as little as $500. But be quick.

Online only, glamcorner.com.au. While stocks last.

Glam Corner is clearing out ex-rental stock, including this dress by Alice McCall.

Assembly Label, the coastal casual label launched in Sydney in 2011, is spreading its wings north of the Yarra, with a new boutique in Fitzroy.

Following the Armadale boutique, which opened last August, the whitewashed store blends perfectly into the street's rich historical heritage.

The label stocks both men's and women's wear, as well as a range of accessories.

"We aim to share a love of design and creativity with a community who appreciates these core values," says Damien Horan, Assembly's creative director.

243 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Monday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm.

Assembly Label has opened its second Melbourne store, in Fitzroy.
