It is time for a thread on traditional urbanism, or town planning 13th century style. I will dispel some myths of modern dis-urbanism.

For all my image making and reading I have yet to make a meme anywhere near the strength of this one. A masterpiece.

I see the same phenomena in warfare, carpentry, agriculture, painting, herbal medicine, hunting and gathering, even in knitting. Hence the disdain of so called experts because they just can't grasp what is happening unless it is gridded, itemized, formalized, standardized.

I wonder how much the destruction of traditional urbanism is just because it was too unruly, too organic, for the ivory tower experts to grasp? Here is Egyptian traditional urbanism: it isn't going to give up its secrets to idiot experts in hurry: easier to just level it all.

The beautiful Humanities Building at Rice University, Houson, Texas, built in 2000, by architect Allan Greenberg. The courtyard was built around—and to house—an old oak tree.

"Castigating Robespierre more than 200 years after his death would have little point if he were not the prototype of the ideological frame of mind that is very much with us today." (from 2006) — ...imagine that schools still hold him out as a kind of hero.

The proper way of traveling/tourism/sightseeing arctic waters is of course by sail. Environmentally correct and far more of an experience than a cruise ship or jumbo jet can ever provide. Photos from the Icelandic company North Sailing.

The buildings are at best charming, and at worst awful, but the scale is perfect. Traditional Saigon , the crowded hẻm alleyways.

Here is a modern western style teahouse built in the UK by Takeshi Hayatsu and Kristin Trommler and students of Cardiff University, using western timber framing, wattle and daub to create their version of Japanese tea house. Ample air and light by just leaving parts undaubed!

Many today are covered in glass panes or paper frames either hung or mounted as usual, but I still see some older buildings were people just nailed a square of mesh to keep bugs out.

Traditionally the idea is to use the wattle that makes up a wall so there was no use for a window frame, but some people want this type of window even in other forms of walls, and for them the design could be premade into a regular window frame and mounted as usual.

The more the shitajimado was adapted outside of the spare tea house, the wilder it could get, with some very artistic designs, peaking in the 1920s.

Some designs were very simple, with just the bare minimum and maybe a handsome wisteria vine tied around the vertical members, whether reed or cut stripes of bamboo.

This farmstead from around 1700 has a small shitajimado next to the hearth, the irori, to provide light and ventilation to the person tending the fire. The same general placement and use became standard in all tea ceremony houses built from the 16th century till today.

In the wattle and daub method of building, windows would be created by just not daubing (mud etc.) part of the wattle (bamboo, wooden sticks, reeds, etc), giving a reasonably structural strength while still allowing air and light to pass through.

The father of tea ceremony, Sen Rikyuu (千利休, 1522-1591) had noticed the rustic windows of the simplest rural farmsteads, and wanted to introduce this very simplest of windows to his tea house.
