Report: Summary Injustice - A Look at Constitutional Deficiencies in South Carolina's Summary Courts
During several weeks from December 2014 to July 2015, attorneys from NACDL and the ACLU observed court sessions in 27 different South Carolina magistrate and municipal courts. This report documents the constitutional violations witnessed in these courts, including failure to inform defendants of their rights, denial of counsel, and jailing those who are unable to pay.
