Car wrapped around power pole after horrific fatal crash north of Brisbane

The impact of a shocking fatal crash north of Brisbane early on Saturday was so great that the engine was found 30 metres away from the car.

Police said the bodies of two people were trapped for some time after the crash, which left the vehicle completely wrapped around a power pole at Deception Bay.

Police were called just before 3.30am after a car travelling on Old Bay Road lost control and hit the power pole, killing the 21-year-old female driver and sole passenger, a 20-year-old man.

Nine News reported residents of the area had heard "a very loud crash" and rushed into the street to try to assist.

Energex had cut the power to the area while emergency services work to free the car from the pole.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital after being hit by a bus on the Gold Coast on Friday evening.

He was struck about 10pm on Nerang Broadbeach Road and was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police are also investigating a crash on the Warrego Highway in Haigslea, west of Brisbane.

Two vehicles were both heading east in the right lane about 7pm on Friday when one crashed into the back of the other. Both vehicles left the highway and rolled.

A 39-year-old man and a child suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment. A 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
