The Australian Press Council was established in 1976 and is responsible for promoting good standards of media practice, community access to information of public interest, and freedom of expression through the media.

The Press Council is also the principal body with responsibility for responding to complaints about Australian newspapers, magazines and associated digital outlets.

Press Freedom Medal  
The Press Council is calling for nominations for its Press Freedom Medal, to be awarded to an individual who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment or service to the cause of press freedom.  Details here.

First Indigenous member publication!
The Press Council is very proud to welcome its first Indigenous member publication: the fortnightly Koori Mail newspaper, based in Lismore, NSW. Read a media release. Look at the Koori Mail here.
