Ask Shorty: should I option my car with LED headlights?

Q: I am looking at buying a new car for the first time in about 12 years and have been doing plenty of research. I've narrowed my choice down to a few, but all have a lot of options available and I'd like your help understanding some of them, particularly what is the difference between Bi-Xenon and LED headlights. Most of the other things seem straight forward, but what are the benefits of paying more for LED headlights.

A: First of all, Xenon is a gas (like Neon lights) and is used in headlights like a conventional globe, although they produce whiter light, draw less power and last longer. LED headlights, which use light emitting diodes, take those principles to the next level, but can also offer more functionality like illuminating a wider area when cornering or, at their most complex, can shutter-out certain areas of the high beam so as not to startle on-coming traffic while still projecting light as far up the inside of the road. While they certainly offer more benefits, they can be quite a costly option on some cars and even more expensive to replace in the event of accident damage.
