What are the different types of windows?

There are so many different types of windows that it would be fruitless to list them all here, but there are a few main types that are typically used in residential architecture.

Fixed windows are windows that cannot be opened and are purely used to let light in; an example would be a stained glass window. Sash windows are a traditional window style made of two sections of panelled glass, one above the other, with either one section or both being able to slide up or down in its frame to allow the window to open. Casement windows can be opened by swinging a panel in or out on a side hinge, like a door. This is possibly the most common type of window found in the UK. Bay windows are usually a set of three windows that stick out slightly from the front of the house to create a small trapezium shaped area; the windows themselves are traditionally sash windows, as would have been used in the Victorian period when bay windows were popular. Oriel windows are similar but would reach to the ground, instead protruding at window level only. Finally, there are french windows (glass doors) and skylights (fixed into the slope of a roof), and many more styles, such as Crittall windows, that you can choose from.

When selecting windows for your house, consider the style that appeals, perhaps considering the period that the window comes from, and also think about light, functionality, durability and it's outside appearance.

What are the different types of doors?

There are perhaps slightly fewer types of doors than windows, but if you're picking out doors for your home, you'll still have a decision on your hands. For external doors your decision will mainly be about the material, although there are a few options in terms of styles and added features, and for your back door you may have the option to look at french windows, sliding patio doors or bifold doors. Otherwise, for front doors, you can choose to go for a traditional wood panelled door, a windowed door or a more modern steel door. If you want something easy, affordable and functional, composite doors offer the look of a wooden door but are not solid wood and instead have an inner layer of an alternative insulating material. For your internal doors you could go for classic wooden hinged doors, super modern glass doors, vintage style french doors or even sliding doors if you want to save on space. If you have a garage, you have even more choices to make when it comes to picking your garage doors – there's roller, sectional, up and over, and side hinged garage doors, to name a few.

When choosing the doors for your home it's important to consider insulation and security as well as appearance. Your front and back doors need to be suitably secure and any glass doors need to be sufficiently glazed as to stop heat being lost through them. If you have any rooms that you want to soundproof, such as an office, studio or music room, then this should also be a major consideration.
