A well-lit kitchen calls for three kinds of light fittings: ambience, task and accent lighting. Of course, kitchen lighting is never be complete without appropriate lights for kitchen cabinets. These may be concealed track lights or, as mentioned above, sensor lights.

Before you start your kitchen lighting shortlists, here are some popular types of lights that are worth checking out.

Kitchen lights: Ceiling to wall

First, focus on kitchen lights for benchtops, tables and sinks. These could be hanging lights or ceiling lights, with some options for wall lighting as well. For instance, pendant lights are great for kitchen tables, and led downlights are great as ceiling light options.

Task lighting: Led downlights, pendant lights and chandeliers

Led downlights are great energy savers; you could even combine two or more to make track lights for the kitchen floor. Slightly less functional, and more mood-driven, pendant lights add a touch of accent mixed with purpose. The shade you pick for your pendant lights will determine their use. You could even use led downlights within the shades on your pendant lights for more spotlight-like kitchen lighting.

If you're after more drama, then chandeliers are your thing. Increasingly used in kitchen lighting, chandeliers can be as big or small, and as muted or dramatic as you'd like them to be.

Interesting led strip lighting for kitchen bars

Use led strip lighting to switch your breakfast bar to an in-home bar by night. These fantastic lights can be concealed or simply laid out around barware and kitchen cabinets to pack in quite a punch. Led strip lighting also works in indoor-outdoor sections that may pan out from a kitchen and dining room space onto your living and patio space.

Light fittings for kitchen cabinets

Lighting kitchen cabinets is easy with track lights and sensor lights - depending on depth and frequency of use. If you like displaying your crockery, glassware and barware, then add some concealed light fittings within each shelf. Track lights are especially useful if you have elaborate kitchen cabinets that open into bars or benchtops.

Sensor lights: Better than night kitchen lights

Sensor lights automatically switch on with the slightest of movements, making them especially useful for houses with young children and pets. While these are mostly used in garages and home entries, they also make excellent kitchen lights. Invest in a few for your kitchen’s hallway as well as for within frequently used cabinets.

Be careful to pick the right shades for any hanging lights as well as for any wall lighting fixtures. Shades that are tough to clean, or ones that pick up grease and dust easily are not suited for kitchen lighting.
