    The vast majority of the code I write is boring. Gluing together stock components according to well-known patterns. Fancy algorithms and data structures and such are incredibly rare. Thoughtful up-front research on what to build is the hard part.

    Hey Californians, starting today, employers are barred by law from requesting your salary history. If you share, it is now illegal to factor it into their decision to hire or how much to offer. They are legally required to give you a pay scale for the position if you request it.

    Sat next to an older woman on my flight to the Midwest. She worked as an anthropologist at Xerox PARC in the 90s. Her job? Figuring out how to stop interviewing software engineers with rote algorithmic questions. I told her the CS world is still awful at interviewing. 🎉

    The New York Times is a great institution that relies on the selfless service of leaders who seldom get the limelight. Janet Elder was one of those leaders. She died yesterday. She was my friend and my champion. I will miss her very much.
