It is kind of mixed, ISBN which stands for International Standard Book Number and is manged by Bowker.com, and are the numbers that are used to track print books and help with distribution. You have to have one if you are going to be distributed to bookstores. They also indicate who the publisher is. They cost $125 each but you can reduce the cost if you buy a bundle of them. Most of the major print on demand companies, CreateSpace.com, Lulu.com, Blurb.com will supply ISBN numbers for free when you use their services, but you will have their name as the publisher. You can also buy them and use your own and the publisher will be your name. Kindle books don’t use ISBN numbers.
I think the decision comes down to if you are going to be a publisher or an author. If you are going to be selling physical books and distributing them through books stores then you have to have an ISBN number. If you are just going to stay on Amazon then you can use theirs. You can also do both, but distribution requires the number.
A couple of things to remember,
1. there aren’t a lot of book stores anymore and most book stores won’t take print-on-demand books from CreateSpace. If you are going in that business then maybe look at LightingSource.com for printing. You will be the distributor
2. Unfortunately most books don’t sell all that much so to taking a $125 hit right off the top might be the total sales of your book. Ouch.
What do I do? I just use the CreateSpace ISBN, it is way easier. I don’t really care who the publisher is, I just want to make books and sell them. You can always change, nothing is locked in, you retain all the rights to your books and content. Take the $125 and put it to marketing, especially on your first couple of books, then see what happens.

I answer an irate email from a follower regarding buying #ISBNs. He bought 1 for an ebook he published. When he wanted to turn that ebook into a paperback, he thought he could use the same ISBN. Remember, you must buy an ISBN for the each format of your book. If you want to make your book The Thorns of Lillies into an ebook, paperback, hard cover, or audiobook, you must have a SEPARATE ISBN for each. If you wrote a book 10 years ago and you want to update the information to keep up with the times, you must use a SEPARATE ISBN. If you have a Thriller Series, each book in that series must have a separate ISBN Number. With that being said, NEVER, EVER, EVER buy JUT 1 ISBN, buy at LEAST 10. 1 ISBN will cost your $125, but $250 will get you 10. I can guarantee you that you will need more than 1. I've said it since day 1. BUY AT LEAST 10 ISBN NUMBERS FOR $250.

In this video I make reference to "legal" ISBNs. Often times, people think they can get around buying ISBNs from Bowker's My Identifiers (https://www.myidentifiers.com/) by buying an ISBN number for $10, $20 or $50 from a fellow author, friend or someone they don't even know, only to find out that that ISBN is attached to the buyer of that ISBN. There are cases where ISBNs can be transferred, like in the case of a company that closes and transfers all their remaining numbers to a new entity. However, one individual number cannot be transferred in an effort to get a cheaper ISBN. If you do buy an ISBN from a friend and you want to republish it under your OWN name or Company, you'll need to purchase a NEW ISBN. So folks, there is no way getting around paying for them. Save yourself time, money and grief by just buying at LEAST 10 under your own name or company.

The process for applying for an ISBN in India is through the website www.isbn.gov.in.
This website was launched on April 7th, 2016. The site is functional but barely, in this video I show some of the typical challenges encountered while applying for ISBN. Overall, I would rate it as a work in progress. The site has its shortcomings, but it works. I was able to get an ISBN within six weeks of applying.
This How To Apply for an ISBN in India Video was made purely out of some trials and errors that I made while reviewing the site.

International Standard Book Number
The International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is a unique numeric commercial book identifier.
An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation (except reprintings) of a book. For example, an e-book, a paperback and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN. The ISBN is 13 digits long if assigned on or after 1 January 2007, and 10 digits long if assigned before 2007. The method of assigning an ISBN is nation-based and varies from country to country, often depending on how large the publishing industry is within a country.
The initial ISBN configuration of recognition was generated in 1967 based upon the 9-digit Standard Book Numbering (SBN) created in 1966. The 10-digit ISBN format was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was published in 1970 as international standard ISO 2108 (the SBN code can be converted to a ten digit ISBN by prefixing it with a zero).
Occasionally, a book may appear without a printed ISBN if it is printed privately or the author does not follow the usual ISBN procedure; however, this can be rectified later.

It is kind of mixed, ISBN which stands for International Standard Book Number and is manged by Bowker.com, and are the numbers that are used to track print books and help with distribution. You have to have one if you are going to be distributed to bookstores. They also indicate who the publisher is. They cost $125 each but you can reduce the cost if you buy a bundle of them. Most of the major print on demand companies, CreateSpace.com, Lulu.com, Blurb.com will supply ISBN numbers for free when you use their services, but you will have their name as the publisher. You can also buy them and use your own and the publisher will be your name. Kindle books don’t use ISBN numbers.
I think the decision comes down to if you are going to be a publisher or an author. If you are going to be selling physical books and distributing them through books stores then you have to have an ISBN number. If you are just going to stay on Amazon then you can use theirs. You can also do both, but distribution requires the number.
A couple of things to remember,
1. there aren’t a lot of book stores anymore and most book stores won’t take print-on-demand books from CreateSpace. If you are going in that business then maybe look at LightingSource.com for printing. You will be the distributor
2. Unfortunately most books don’t sell all that much so to taking a $125 hit right off the top might be the total sales of your book. Ouch.
What do I do? I just use the CreateSpace ISBN, it is way easier. I don’t really care who the publisher is, I just want to make books and sell them. You can always change, nothing is locked in, you retain all the rights to your books and content. Take the $125 and put it to marketing, especially on your first couple of books, then see what happens.

I answer an irate email from a follower regarding buying #ISBNs. He bought 1 for an ebook he published. When he wanted to turn that ebook into a paperback, he thought he could use the same ISBN. Remember, you must buy an ISBN for the each format of your book. If you want to make your book The Thorns of Lillies into an ebook, paperback, hard cover, or audiobook, you must have a SEPARATE ISBN for each. If you wrote a book 10 years ago and you want to update the information to keep up with the times, you must use a SEPARATE ISBN. If you have a Thriller Series, each book in that series must have a separate ISBN Number. With that being said, NEVER, EVER, EVER buy JUT 1 ISBN, buy at LEAST 10. 1 ISBN will cost your $125, but $250 will get you 10. I can guarantee you that you will need more than 1. I've said it since day 1. BUY AT LEAST 10 ISBN NUMBERS FOR $250.

Often times, people think they can get around buying ISBNs from Bowker's My Identifiers (https://www.myidentifiers.com/) by buying an ISBN number for $10, $20 or $50 from a fellow author, friend or someone they don't even know, only to find out that that ISBN is attached to the buyer of that ISBN. There are cases where ISBNs can be transferred, like in the case of a company that closes and transfers all their remaining numbers to a new entity. However, one individual number cannot be transferred in an effort to get a cheaper ISBN. If you do buy an ISBN from a friend and you want to republish it under your OWN name or Company, you'll need to purchase a NEW ISBN. So folks, there is no way getting around paying for them. Save yourself time, money and grief by just buying at LEAST 10 under your own name or company.

Overall, I would rate it as a work in progress. The site has its shortcomings, but it works. I was able to get an ISBN within six weeks of applying.
