Patricia Lee "Patti" Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist who became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
Called the "punk poet laureate", Smith fused rock and poetry in her work. Smith's most widely known song is "Because the Night", which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen. The song reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. On November 17, 2010, she won the National Book Award for her memoir Just Kids. The book fulfilled a promise she had made to her former long-time roommate and partner, Robert Mapplethorpe. In Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Artists published in December 2010, she was in 47th place. She is also a recipient of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.

Plot: CBGB follows the story of Hilly Kristal's New York club from its conceit as a venue for Country, Bluegrass and Blues (CBGB) to what it ultimately became: the birthplace of underground rock 'n roll and punk. When Kristal had difficulty booking country bands in his club on the Bowery he opened his doors to other kinds of rock music. Kristal had one demand of the acts he booked; they could only play original music. No top 40's, no covers. It was the credo he lived by, support the artist at whatever the cost. Hilly Kristal ironically became known as the godfather of punk giving a chance to such bands as Blondie, Television, Ramones, Talking Heads, Dead Boys and The Police.

Plot: "Patti" focuses upon Patti Smith's performance of the iconic "Gloria" on Saturday Night Live in 1976. Inspired by the art, words and life of Patti Smith, the film ventures behind the scenes and explores the imagined intimate moments prior to this storied event. "Patti" concludes with the explosive performance that introduced the "Godmother of Punk" to the masses.

Horses (1975) Lyrics: http://www.lyricstime.com/patti-smith-horses-lyrics.html Called the "Godmother of Punk", her work is a fusion of rock and poetry. The cover photo (first in this video) was taken by Robert Mapplethorpe using natural light in a penthouse in Greenwich Village. The triangle of light on the wall (too blurry to discern as a geometric figure on the above low resolution image) was the product of the afternoon sun. The record company wanted to make various changes to the photo, but Smith overruled such attempts. 70-minute interview with Patti Smith from the Louisiana Literature festival in Denmark 2012. ”I thought we didn’t have to grow up. I was heart broken to find out that we didn’t have a choice.” Patti Smith is still running wild, staying young at heart. ”We contain multitudes” begins Patti Smith (b.1946) in this interview about her many different energies and ways of expressing herself. She goes on to demonstrate this: Reading from her book 'Woolgathering' (1992), talking about spirituality and prayer and how we all have creative impulses. Patti Smith also performs 'Fire of Unknown Origin', talks about her big love Robert Mapplethorpe, about inspiration, writing and art, and reads from her book 'Just Kids' (2010). Finally Patti Smith offers advice to the young, and talks about the world tod...
Bologna, Italy, Spazio Labò, 26/07/2010 Patti Smith was in Bologna on the 26th of July to present her book "Just kids". The event took place in a photographic art gallery (Spazio Labò) and, of course, drew many many people. Patti Smith was first interviewed about her book then, accompanied by her guitarist Lenny Kaye, she sang two songs. I'm very glad to show you these two pieces and I hope you'll enjoy them. Live performance. The first time Patti Smith performed on a stage she read the poem “Fire of Unknown Origin”, set to music by Lenny Kaye. Watch their performance of the poem again 41 years later at the Louisiana Literature festival. When Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye performed “Fire of Unknown Origin” in St Mark’s Church on February 10, 1971 it aroused as much outrage as enthusiasm, Patti Smith says here, and compares the episode to what Pussy Riot have been going through in Russia. Here Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye perform the number, which Smith calls “scary” because it’s so long since she has done it on stage. Interview by Christian Lund, Louisiana Literature, 2012. In Just Kids, Patti Smith’s first book of prose, the legendary American artist offers a never-before-seen glimpse of her remarkable relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe in the epochal days of New York City and the Chelsea Hotel in the late sixties and seventies. An honest story of youth and friendship, Smith brings the same unique, lyrical quality to Just Kids as she has to the rest of her formidable body of work—from her influential 1975 album Horses to her visual art and poetry. Patti Smith is a writer, artist and performer. Her seminal album Horses was followed by nine releases including Radio Ethiopia, Easter, Dream of Life, Gone Again and Trampin’. Her art work was first exhibited at Gotham Book Mart in 1973, and she has been associated with the Robert Miller Gallery s...

Here's a part 2 of sorts to that amazing Subterranean show. Kicking a can of PBR and flailing away with a mic stand, Carrie Brownstein led her spectacular lady cohorts through their first-ever Chicago show as Wild Flag. Here's "Ask the Angels", a Patti Smith Group cover. Stellar. Go see them before the inevitable rise to Metro, Bottom Lounge and beyond. The song Stardust was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Mitchell Parish in the late 1920's and performed March 11, 2001 at the Gregory Corso Memorial held at the Angel Orensanz Foundation on New York's lower east side. THE GREGORY CORSO MEMORIAL - March 11, 2001 Gregory Corso was a key member of the Beat movement, a group of convention-breaking writers who were credited with sparking much of the social and political change that transformed the United States in the 1960s. Corso's spontaneous, insightful, and inspirational verse once prompted fellow Beat poet Allen Ginsberg to describe him as an "awakener of youth." Although Corso enjoyed his greatest level of popularity during the 1960s and 1970s, he continued to influence contemporary readers and critics late into the twentieth century. W...

"Build a good name," rock poet Patti Smith advises the young. "Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises. Don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned about doing good work and protect your work." The American singer, poet and photographer Patti Smith (b. 1946) is a living punk rock legend. In this video she gives powerful advice to the young: "Protect your work and if you build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency. http://www.cbc.ca/strombo/ Check out the full, extended interview with Patti Smith. More than any rock star, Patti embodies that dynamic - maybe you've felt it yourself... the need to break away and rediscover yourself. Growing up in South Jersey, Patti toiled in a factory job, read poetry, and plotted her escape. In New York, she became a poet herself... and when that poetry was put to music - minds were blown. Once she'd given rock & roll the shot of adrenaline it needed, Patti retired to the suburbs to raise a family with her husband, the late Fred 'Sonic' Smith from the mighty MC5. Now back in New York - and touring the world with her most recent album 'Banga' - Patti is far from retiring: her many projects include a mystery novel, a film, a screenplay, plus another book - the follow...
