It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. The terror group Islamic State claimed its first attack in Somalia earlier this week – though the claim has not been verified by forces on the ground. Meanwhile Al-Shabab militants have stepped up their attacks as Somalia prepares for elections later this year. As VOA’s Henry Ridgwell reports, there are growing frustrations among Somalia’s western backers over the country’s slow progress in forming its own armed forces to establish security after 25 years of chaos. Over the last two years Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and its foreign counterparts have been training the Alpha Group, an elite unit of Somalia’s national security forces capable of responding to any security crisis in the capital of Mogadishu. Credible sources in the government told Somalia Report that Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed was behind the idea of creation of this elite unit to beef up the capability of the police and military units in responding to emergency situations, aid the police in special operations and investigations into areas abandoned by the al-Shabaab fighters, and to protect the security of the foreign diplomats coming to the capital. Some of the 300 forces who are former al-Shabaab fighters can identify the remnants of militants in the area...
Somalia's al-Qaeda-linked rebel group, al-Shabab, has vowed to recapture all Somali territory that it lost in the past year during battles with government forces and African Union peacekeepers. In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera conducted earlier this month, al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Ali Dheere said the rebel group was not on the back foot despite the recent losses. "Al-Shabab leaving those towns only shows a change of tactics. We will not be finished. Somalia belongs to al-Shabab. The land and the people are ours. We will not leave our land because of an enemy," Ali Dheere said, adding that there was no chance of holding talks with the government.

The Malaysian owned firm has been operating in the country for a year offering motor vehicle, health and marine insurance. For Somalis, the sale translates to cheaper policies and expansion to rural areas. Zurich Insurance is set to take full ownership of the company after the deal received regulatory approval, giving Europe's fifth-biggest insurer a foothold in the world's second largest Islamic insurance market.

Take a quick drive with us through liberated Mogadishu, from Lido Beach, Abdiaziz, to Via Roma, Hamarweyne. The Somali government re-took the city from Shabaab rebels with support from the African Union well over a year ago and now despite some remaining concerns daytime checkpoints have been removed from the main roads. Security is still something to consider, nevertheless the city is safer than it has been in over two decades and many people are coming home and finally seeing how the city will heal. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has told a security conference in Germany that terrorist groups have trained in his country and that the African states need to be organized. President Mohamud admitted his country has been plagued by al-Shabab militants as well as corruption and political infighting and has only made limited progress in setting up a working political system. The presence of Boko Haram—the Takfiri terror group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh—adds a deadly dimension to an already alarming situation in Somalia. President Mohamud added, ‘The terrorists are so linked together, they are associated and so organized, (that) we the world we need to be so organized.’ But is this call for cooperation simply window dressing?
