In findings unlikely to shock anyone with small children, the results of a national survey of behaviour in the bedroom have revealed that Aussie mums prefer sleeping over sex.

And yet, while choosing sex over action between the sheets might not surprise sleepy mums, the National Sex Survey, conducted by lifestyle site, The Healthy Mummy, highlighted that we're not just tired - we're not feeling very confident about our bodies, either.

Of the 3000 mums who responded to the survey, a whopping 25 per cent reported that a lack of body confidence was the reason for not getting intimate with their partner. 66 per cent of women reported feeling more confident in bed after losing weight, while around half of mums prefer switching the lights off before sexy time.

Fatigue and lack of confidence aren't the only factors responsible for a lack of intimacy.

10 per cent of mums aren't having sex because their kids are always in their bed, while 4 per cent find their partner "too annoying".

When it comes to the question of frequency, if you're currently having sex around 2 - 3 times a month then you're not alone. A quarter of mums fell into this category while 10 per cent are getting busy over 10 times a month.

For Rhian Allen, founder of The Healthy Mummy, empowering mums to focus on living a healthier life - so they feel at their best - is the goal of her site.

"A healthy sex life can often go hand in hand with being healthy," she says. "Our focus at The Healthy Mummy is educating mums about healthy foods, healthy exercise and offering daily support to achieve this – which then goes hand in hand with healthy weight loss and body confidence. If this then leads to a healthier sex life this is without doubt an added bonus!"
