George Clooney has opened up for the first time about becoming a dad, sharing his excitement about the "adventure" ahead.

In an interview with French program, Rencontres de Cinema, Clooney, 55, who is expecting twins with his wife, human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, confirmed the news, saying: "We are really happy and really excited. It's going to be an adventure."

Describing that he and Amal, 39, have "sort of embraced it all ... with arms wide open," Clooney also shared details of his friends' reactions - friends whom, the actor admits, "have already done this."

"It got really quiet," Clooney said of his announcement.  "And they all just started making baby crying noises, and the whole table just busted up laughing."

And while most of his mates are well and truly beyond the nappy stage, ("all their kids are away in college"), Clooney admitted looking to other older dads - including French actor 89-year-old Jean-Paul Belmondo who welcomed his second child when he was 70 - for inspiration.

"So, I'm feeling a little better about being 56 by the time [the twins come]," he said.

Acknowledging that fatherhood is, "going to change a lot of things," Clooney added, "but that's okay. "That's life".

US daytime show, The Talk, broke the news earlier this month, host Julie Chen announcing, "Beyonce is not the only superstar expecting twins."

The couple, who married in 2014, will reportedly welcome their new additions in June.
