A former restaurant gets an eclectic makeover with strong hues and bold designs

A former restaurant in suburban Melbourne delivers a whole new menu thanks to a colourful and eclectic makeover.

The home

A two-storey former restaurant in Albert Park, Melbourne, converted into a combination of shop (Nyary ES, selling homewares and furniture) and home.

Who lives here

Jenny Keys, store manager and buyer, and Peter Nyary, furniture maker.

What we did

"The front room upstairs became our lounge, and the second room is our bedroom," says Jenny. "Peter has started increasing the doorway heights upstairs to improve the light and the flow of the rooms."

My favourite room

"The front lounge room as it has a beautiful feel, and from the balcony you can see the city one way and the beach the other," says Jenny.

The 'hood'

"We can walk everywhere – to the market, the beach, the city and I only have to walk downstairs to work. What more could one want? We live between the best pizza restaurant and a fish and chip shop, so we don't cook much."

Future plans

"It's always going to be a work in progress as Peter has a never-ending list of home improvements. The bathroom renovation is next, and he'll also build somewhere to hang all our clothes."

Best advice

"Fear not – anything goes!" says Jenny. "Choose pieces you love and surround yourself with whatever makes you happy."
