From Ancient Greek Ἀσῐ́ᾱ (Asíā), from Mycenaean Greek 𐀀𐀯𐀹𐀊 (a-si-wi-ja, Aššuwan, /aswiyā/), adjective potentially from Hittite 𒀸𒋗𒉿 (Aššuwa, northwest Anatolia) or Akkadian 𒀀𒋗 (to go out, to rise), a reference to the rising sun, hence “land of the sunrise.”
