New Hyundai i30 wagon revealed

Hyundai has ripped the covers off its new i30 wagon ahead of its official Geneva motor show reveal in March. 

The wagon mirrors the previously unveiled hatch variant with a new 'cascade grille' and sleeker, softer proportions. It measures 245mm longer than the hatch but retains the same wheelbase, which means the extra space is reserved for cargo-carrying capacity. 

The wagon variant features a more tapered roof line than the Hyundai's current small wagon sold in Australia, known as the i30 Tourer. 

Like the hatchback, the wagon scores an extensive suite of safety equipment including autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue alert, auto high beam, reversing camera, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and speed sign information display. 

Hyundai has given the interior a once over with the inclusion of an 8-inch floating tablet-style screen with navigation and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring technology. However, there is a lower-spec 5.0-inch touchscreen that doesn't feature smartphone mirroring or navigation. 

Australian options for the i30 wagon are still unclear. We know that the i30 hatch will be offered with a range of engines, several of which will make it down under. The entry-level model will be powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine that is found in the i30 SR which produces 124kW and 201Nm in its current form. A diesel unit will also be carried over from the present diesel variant. 

However, Australia is set to miss out on the new 103kW/242Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will be offered in Europe. 

In hatch form, Hyundai will offer either a six-speed manual, six-speed auto or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission depending on the engine. 

Hyundai has also confirmed that it is working on a i30 N hot hatch that is tipped to boast 200kW and be equipped with a limited slip differential. 

The new i30 hatch goes on sale locally in April.
