Zurich by Night
Der Pilot landet sanft auf Piste 14. Willkommen in Zürich. Schnallen Sie sich an: Der dreiminütige Besuch in der Limmatstadt gleicht einer fantastischen Achterbahnfahrt. Das Feuerwerk von Eindrücken überrascht mit dynamischen Hyperlapse-Aufnahmen, entstanden aus dem Cockpit eines SWISS-Airbus oder aus dem Führerstand einer S-Bahn. Zu den Highlights gehören ein Sprung ins Opernhaus, das brodelnde Nebelmeer um den Prime Tower und jene Momente, in denen die Perspektive hoch über die Stadt abhebt. Für die Aufnahmen aus der Luft wurde eine eigens dafür optimierte Drohne verwendet. Für diesen Film wurden insgesamt 90'000 Fotos erstellt.

Das Gemeinschafts-Projekt der beiden Fotografen Alessandro Della Bella und Christian Mülhauser wurde beim Drehbuch und in der Postproduktion unterstützt von Milan Rohrer, Sales Wick und Florian Trojer von SkyProduction. Das Projekt ZURICH CITY NIGHT LIGHTS entstand in den Monaten Oktober/November 2012, nachdem auf diversen Platformen Videos von grossen Metropolen wie New York, Los Angeles oder San Francisco gesichtet wurden. Zürich ist zwar um einiges kleiner als diese Grossstädte, hat jedoch ebenfalls vieles zu bieten. Nicht zuletzt, da die grösste Stadt der Schweiz in einem ständigen Wandel ist und kontinuierlich wächst.
Durch die Grösse bedingt, ist Sightseeing in Zürich eine kurze Sache. Wird aber genau hingeschaut, gibt es einige Orte, die einen ganz besonderen Charme haben. Besonders nachts erstrahlen manche Plätze in völlig neuem Licht und lassen das urbane Leben aufleuchten. Selbst nach acht Jahren fand der Künstler immer neue Dinge, die bei Tageslicht unscheinbar sind.
Um die Stadt Zürich von seiner romantischen Seite zu zeigen, wurde aus 33'150 Fotos ein sogenanntes Time-lapse / Zeitraffer Video kreiert. Hierbei werden einzelne Bilder in einem definierten Interval aufgenommen und anschliessend zu einem Video zusammengeführt. Der Aufwand ist dementsprechend hoch. Während unzähligen Nächten und über 200 Stunden Arbeit entstand eine Präsentation vom Zürcher Nachtleben, wie man sie selten sieht.
Neben der aufwändigen Suche nach geeigneten Motiven, war jeweils auch Ausdauer vonnöten, denn das Fotografieren der einzelnen Sequenzen dauerte jeweils zwischen 10-120 Minuten. In der Innenstadt war Warten neben der Kamera angesagt. An Orten, wie der Forch, wiederum konnte die Aufnahme gestartet und die Ausrüstung einige Stunden später wieder abgeholt werden.
Während des Wartens in Zürich waren die Passanten interessiert daran, was die Kamera da genau macht und wie Time-lapse Fotografie funktioniert bzw. was das überhaupt ist.

Kick off your evening at either the Widder Bar for its 250 malt whiskies and their bizarre cocktails or head over to Zurich West for a few drinks at outdoor beer garden Frau Gerolds or Les Halles, which is a fun indoor lounge with pinball machines, fussball and a giant bar - the best spot to socialize with the locals.
If you are not a heavy clubber I highly recommend Helsinkiklub, one of the most fun places in town with laid back locals, hiphop, cheap beers and a welcoming atmosphere.
As most of you know, Zurich is the most expensive city in the world and many of these parties are quite expensive with entrance fees around $30 CAD and beers around $14 CAD it can end up being an expensive night for the average traveller.

Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and worldwide known for its high quality of living (and just happens to be one of the most expensive cities worldwide too!). A picturesque old town, great shopping facilities, a large variety of cultural attractions, a beautiful lakeside and lots of green areas make a visit to Zurich a multifaceted experience. With its international airport the city is a good base to start discovering the country.
Besides that, it's a cool playground for time-lapse photography. Footage has mostly been shot for testing purposes and shows impressions of a pulsating and electrifying city in winter time. Enjoy!

'Helvetia by Night' is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
The three videos 'Helvetia's Dream', 'Frenetic Zurich' and 'Nuclear Power (and Cows)' are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon.
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as 'Helvetians' became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia).

I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Since 2005 I work as press photographer for the Swiss press photo agency KEYSTONE in Zurich. Time-lapse photography became a favorite hobby of mine in the year 2011. ‚Helvatia by Night' ist ein Zeitraffer-Projekt (Time-Lapse) über die Schweiz bei Nacht. Kurzfilme zeigen die atemberaubende Schönheit der Schweizer Bergwelt und einen spektakulären Sternenhimmel, wie Sie vielleicht erst davon geträumt haben. Alles was hier präsentiert wird, ist jedoch absolut real. Schnell aneinander gereihte Fotos werden zu einem Film, wie in einem Daumenkino.
Helvetias Traum, Frenetisches Zürich und Atomkraft (mit Kühen) sind meine ersten Time-Lapse Filme und damit der Anfang eines spannenden Projektes. Mit jeder Nacht in den Bergen gewinne ich neue Erfahrungen und lerne Wertvolles dazu. Bald werden weitere Kurzfilme aus bestehendem Material hier aufgeschaltet.
Helvetia ist die vom Volksstamm der Helvetier abgeleitete neulateinische Bezeichnung für die Schweiz und eine allegorische Frauenfigur, welche die Schweiz versinnbildlicht. Auf Briefmarken und Münzen wird bis heute ‚Helvetia' als Landesbezeichnung verwendet (Quelle: Wikipedia).

Zürich-West by Night
Zürich-West is a former indistrual district which in recent yeas slowly converted to one of Zurich's hip zones with restaurants, bars, dance clubs and a theather. Most of the time-lapses in this video were shot for Swiss Televisions SRF live broadcast from dusk to dawn about the various hot spots of Zürich-West.
The images were shot with Canon and Panasonic photo cameras and rendererd in Motion and After Effects. Editing and grading in Final Cut Pro X.

Night
Night or nighttime (sp. night-time or night time) is the period of time between the sunset and the sunrise when the Sun is below the horizon.
This occurs after dusk. The opposite of night is day (or "daytime" to distinguish it from "day" as used for a 24-hour period). The start and end points of time of a night vary based on factors such as season, latitude, longitude and timezone.

Both Zürich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.
Permanently settled for around 2000 years, Zürich has a history that goes back to its founding by the Romans, who, in 15 BC, called it Turicum. However, early settlements have been found dating back more than 6400 years ago. During the Middle Ages Zürich gained the independent and privileged status of imperial immediacy and, in 1519, became a primary centre of the Protestant Reformation in Europe under the leadership of Ulrich Zwingli.

Zürich Hauptbahnhof
Zürich Hauptbahnhof (often shortened to Zürich HB; English: Zürich Main Station or Zürich Central Station) is the largest railway station in Switzerland. Zürich is a major railway hub, with services to and from across Switzerland and neighbouring European countries such as Germany, Italy, Austria and France. Constructed as the terminus of the Spanisch Brötli Bahn, the first railway built completely within Switzerland, it is the second oldest railway station in Switzerland. Serving up to 2,915 trains per day, Zürich HB is one of the busiest railway stations in the world.
The station can be found at the northern end of the Altstadt, or old town, in central Zürich, near the confluence of the rivers Limmat and Sihl. The Sihl passes under the station in a tunnel. The station's railway yards extend about 4 km (2.5 mi) to the west.
The station is included in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Significance.
History
The first station
The first Zürich railway station was built by Gustav Albert Wegmann, on what were then the north-western outskirts of the city. It occupied a piece of land between the Limmat and Sihl rivers, and trains accessed it from the west via a bridge over the Sihl. At the eastern end of the station was a turntable, used for turning locomotives. This basic terminal station layout, with all trains departing and departing from the east, was to set the basic design of the station for the next 143 years.

Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and worldwide known for its high quality of living (and just happens to be one of the most expensive cities worldwide too!). A picturesque old town, great shopping facilities, a large variety of cultural attractions, a beautiful lakeside and lots of green areas make a visit to Zurich a multifaceted experience. With its international airport the city is a good base to start discovering the country. Besides that, it's a cool playground for time-lapse photography. Footage has mostly been shot for testing purposes and shows impressions of a pulsating and electrifying city in winter time. Enjoy! Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping. The three videos 'Helvetia's Dream', 'Frenetic Zurich' and 'Nuclear Power (and Cows)' are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon. Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as 'Helvetians' became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia). Some words about me: I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Since 2005 I work as press photographer for the Swiss press photo agency KEYSTONE in Zurich. Time-lapse photography became a favorite hobby of mine in the year 2011. Most of the time-lapses in this video were shot for Swiss Televisions SRF live broadcast from dusk to dawn about the various hot spots of Zürich-West. The images were shot with Canon and Panasonic photo cameras and rendererd in Motion and After Effects. Editing and grading in Final Cut Pro X.

Das Projekt ZURICH CITY NIGHT LIGHTS entstand in den Monaten Oktober/November 2012, nachdem auf diversen Platformen Videos von grossen Metropolen wie New York, Los Angeles oder San Francisco gesichtet wurden. Zürich ist zwar um einiges kleiner als diese Grossstädte, hat jedoch ebenfalls vieles zu bieten. Nicht zuletzt, da die grösste Stadt der Schweiz in einem ständigen Wandel ist und kontinuierlich wächst.
Durch die Grösse bedingt, ist Sightseeing in Zürich eine kurze Sache. Wird aber genau hingeschaut, gibt es einige Orte, die einen ganz besonderen Charme haben. Besonders nachts erstrahlen manche Plätze in völlig neuem Licht und lassen das urbane Leben aufleuchten. Selbst nach acht Jahren fand der Künstler immer neue Dinge, die bei Tageslicht unscheinbar sind.
Um die Stadt Zürich von seiner romantischen Seite zu zeigen, wurde aus 33'150 Fotos ein sogenanntes Time-lapse / Zeitraffer Video kreiert. Hierbei werden einzelne Bilder in einem definierten Interval aufgenommen und anschliessend zu einem Video zusammengeführt. Der Aufwand ist dementsprechend hoch. Während unzähligen Nächten und über 200 Stunden Arbeit entstand eine Präsentation vom Zürcher Nachtleben, wie man sie selten sieht.
Neben der aufwändigen Suche nach geeigneten Motiven, war jeweils auch Ausdauer vonnöten, denn das Fotografieren der einzelnen Sequenzen dauerte jeweils zwischen 10-120 Minuten. In der Innenstadt war Warten neben der Kamera angesagt. An Orten, wie der Forch, wiederum konnte die Aufnahme gestartet und die Ausrüstung einige Stunden später wieder abgeholt werden.
Während des Wartens in Zürich waren die Passanten interessiert daran, was die Kamera da genau macht und wie Time-lapse Fotografie funktioniert bzw. was das überhaupt ist.

Das Projekt ZURICH CITY NIGHT LIGHTS entstand in den Monaten Oktober/November 2012, nachdem auf diversen Platformen Videos von grossen Metropolen wie New York, Los Angeles oder San Francisco gesichtet wurden. Zürich ist zwar um einiges kleiner als diese Grossstädte, hat jedoch ebenfalls vieles zu bieten. Nicht zuletzt, da die grösste Stadt der Schweiz in einem ständigen Wandel ist und kontinuierlich wächst.
Durch die Grösse bedingt, ist Sightseeing in Zürich eine kurze Sache. Wird aber genau hingeschaut, gibt es einige Orte, die einen ganz besonderen Charme haben. Besonders nachts erstrahlen manche Plätze in völlig neuem Licht und lassen das urbane Leben aufleuchten. Selbst nach acht Jahren fand der Künstler immer neue Dinge, die bei Tageslicht unscheinbar sind.
Um die Stadt Zürich von seiner romantischen Seite zu zeigen, wurde aus 33'150 Fotos ein sogenanntes Time-lapse / Zeitraffer Video kreiert. Hierbei werden einzelne Bilder in einem definierten Interval aufgenommen und anschliessend zu einem Video zusammengeführt. Der Aufwand ist dementsprechend hoch. Während unzähligen Nächten und über 200 Stunden Arbeit entstand eine Präsentation vom Zürcher Nachtleben, wie man sie selten sieht.
Neben der aufwändigen Suche nach geeigneten Motiven, war jeweils auch Ausdauer vonnöten, denn das Fotografieren der einzelnen Sequenzen dauerte jeweils zwischen 10-120 Minuten. In der Innenstadt war Warten neben der Kamera angesagt. An Orten, wie der Forch, wiederum konnte die Aufnahme gestartet und die Ausrüstung einige Stunden später wieder abgeholt werden.
Während des Wartens in Zürich waren die Passanten interessiert daran, was die Kamera da genau macht und wie Time-lapse Fotografie funktioniert bzw. was das überhaupt ist.

If you are not a heavy clubber I highly recommend Helsinkiklub, one of the most fun places in town with laid back locals, hiphop, cheap beers and a welcoming atmosphere.
As most of you know, Zurich is the most expensive city in the world and many of these parties are quite expensive with entrance fees around $30 CAD and beers around $14 CAD it can end up being an expensive night for the average traveller.

Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and worldwide known for its high quality of living (and just happens to be one of the most expensive cities worldwide too!). A picturesque old town, great shopping facilities, a large variety of cultural attractions, a beautiful lakeside and lots of green areas make a visit to Zurich a multifaceted experience. With its international airport the city is a good base to start discovering the country.
Besides that, it's a cool playground for time-lapse photography. Footage has mostly been shot for testing purposes and shows impressions of a pulsating and electrifying city in winter time. Enjoy!

'Helvetia by Night' is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
The three videos 'Helvetia's Dream', 'Frenetic Zurich' and 'Nuclear Power (and Cows)' are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon.
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as 'Helvetians' became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia).

I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Since 2005 I work as press photographer for the Swiss press photo agency KEYSTONE in Zurich. Time-lapse photography became a favorite hobby of mine in the year 2011. Kurzfilme zeigen die atemberaubende Schönheit der Schweizer Bergwelt und einen spektakulären Sternenhimmel, wie Sie vielleicht erst davon geträumt haben. Alles was hier präsentiert wird, ist jedoch absolut real. Schnell aneinander gereihte Fotos werden zu einem Film, wie in einem Daumenkino.
Helvetias Traum, Frenetisches Zürich und Atomkraft (mit Kühen) sind meine ersten Time-Lapse Filme und damit der Anfang eines spannenden Projektes. Mit jeder Nacht in den Bergen gewinne ich neue Erfahrungen und lerne Wertvolles dazu. Bald werden weitere Kurzfilme aus bestehendem Material hier aufgeschaltet.
Helvetia ist die vom Volksstamm der Helvetier abgeleitete neulateinische Bezeichnung für die Schweiz und eine allegorische Frauenfigur, welche die Schweiz versinnbildlicht. Auf Briefmarken und Münzen wird bis heute ‚Helvetia' als Landesbezeichnung verwendet (Quelle: Wikipedia).

Ich bin in Arosa aufgewachsen, einem kleinen Paradies in der Bündner Bergwelt auf 1800 Metern über Meer. Inspiriert durch die beeindruckende Berglandschaft habe ich schon früh die Fotografie als meine Passion entdeckt. Seit 2005 arbeite ich als Pressefotograf bei der Schweizer Bildagentur KEYSTONE in Zürich. Die Time-Lapse Fotografie ist seit 2011 mein Lieblingshobby. Zürich-West is a former indistrual district which in recent yeas slowly converted to one of Zurich's hip zones with restaurants, bars, dance clubs and a theather. Most of the time-lapses in this video were shot for Swiss Televisions SRF live broadcast from dusk to dawn about the various hot spots of Zürich-West.
The images were shot with Canon and Panasonic photo cameras and rendererd in Motion and After Effects. Editing and grading in Final Cut Pro X.

Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and worldwide known for its high quality of living (and just happens to be one of the most expensive cities worldwide too!). A picturesque old town, great shopping facilities, a large variety of cultural attractions, a beautiful lakeside and lots of green areas make a visit to Zurich a multifaceted experience. With its international airport the city is a good base to start discovering the country. Besides that, it's a cool playground for time-lapse photography. Das Projekt ZURICH CITY NIGHT LIGHTS entstand in den Monaten Oktober/November 2012, nachdem auf diversen Platformen Videos von grossen Metropolen wie New York, Los Angeles oder San Francisco gesichtet wurden. Zürich ist zwar um einiges kleiner als diese Grossstädte, hat jedoch ebenfalls vieles zu bieten. Nicht zuletzt, da die grösste Stadt der Schweiz in einem ständigen Wandel ist und kontinuierlich wächst.
Durch die Grösse bedingt, ist Sightseeing in Zürich eine kurze Sache. Wird aber genau hingeschaut, gibt es einige Orte, die einen ganz besonderen Charme haben. Besonders nachts erstrahlen manche Plätze in völlig neuem Licht und lassen das urbane Leben aufleuchten. Selbst nach acht Jahren fand der Künstler immer neue Dinge, die bei Tageslicht unscheinbar sind.
Um die Stadt Zürich von seiner romantischen Seite zu zeigen, wurde aus 33'150 Fotos ein sogenanntes Time-lapse / Zeitraffer Video kreiert. Hierbei werden einzelne Bilder in einem definierten Interval aufgenommen und anschliessend zu einem Video zusammengeführt. Der Aufwand ist dementsprechend hoch. Während unzähligen Nächten und über 200 Stunden Arbeit entstand eine Präsentation vom Zürcher Nachtleben, wie man sie selten sieht.
Neben der aufwändigen Suche nach geeigneten Motiven, war jeweils auch Ausdauer vonnöten, denn das Fotografieren der einzelnen Sequenzen dauerte jeweils zwischen 10-120 Minuten. In der Innenstadt war Warten neben der Kamera angesagt. An Orten, wie der Forch, wiederum konnte die Aufnahme gestartet und die Ausrüstung einige Stunden später wieder abgeholt werden.
Während des Wartens in Zürich waren die Passanten interessiert daran, was die Kamera da genau macht und wie Time-lapse Fotografie funktioniert bzw. was das überhaupt ist.

'Helvetia by Night' is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
The three videos 'Helvetia's Dream', 'Frenetic Zurich' and 'Nuclear Power (and Cows)' are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon.
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as 'Helvetians' became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia).

I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city and worldwide known for its high quality of living (and just happens to be one of the most expensive cities worldwide too!). A picturesque old town, great shopping facilities, a large variety of cultural attractions, a beautiful lakeside and lots of green areas make a visit to Zurich a multifaceted experience. With its international airport the city is a good base to start discovering the country.
Besides that, it's a cool playground for time-lapse photography. Footage has mostly been shot for testing purposes and shows impressions of a pulsating and electrifying city in winter time. Enjoy!

'Helvetia by Night' is a time-lapse project about Switzerland by night. Short videos of long nights present you the stunning beauty of the Swiss Alps and show you the magic of a spectacular nighttime sky. Imagine watching a slide-show at fast speed or looking at a flip book. It is photography turning into a movie. Everything in the videos is real and happening out there while most of us are sleeping.
The three videos 'Helvetia's Dream', 'Frenetic Zurich' and 'Nuclear Power (and Cows)' are my first footsteps on the road of time-lapse photography. It is a most exciting road to follow with lots of testing, trying and learning every night I spend photographing in the Swiss mountains. Right now, 3D motion control is my biggest challenge. More time-lapse videos of existing footage will be published soon.
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland. The name is a derivation of the ethnonym Helvetii, the name of the Gaulish tribe inhabiting the Swiss Plateau prior to the Roman conquest. Identification of the Swiss as 'Helvetians' became common in the 18th century and Helvetia appears on official federal coins and stamps (Source: Wikipedia).

I grew up in Arosa, a small paradise in the mountains of eastern Switzerland located 1800m above sea level. Inspired by such great scenery, photography has become my passion early in life. Zürich-West is a former indistrual district which in recent yeas slowly converted to one of Zurich's hip zones with restaurants, bars, dance clubs and a theather. Most of the time-lapses in this video were shot for Swiss Televisions SRF live broadcast from dusk to dawn about the various hot spots of Zürich-West.
The images were shot with Canon and Panasonic photo cameras and rendererd in Motion and After Effects. Editing and grading in Final Cut Pro X.
