Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she had the additional title of Empress of India.
Victoria was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, the fourth son of King George III. Both the Duke of Kent and King George III died in 1820, and Victoria was raised under close supervision by her German-born mother Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. She inherited the throne aged 18, after her father's three elder brothers had all died, leaving no surviving legitimate children. The United Kingdom was already an established constitutional monarchy, in which the sovereign held relatively little direct political power. Privately, Victoria attempted to influence government policy and ministerial appointments; publicly, she became a national icon who was identified with strict standards of personal morality.
Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in 1840. Their nine children married into royal and noble families across the continent, tying them together and earning her the sobriquet "the grandmother of Europe". After Albert's death in 1861, Victoria plunged into deep mourning and avoided public appearances. As a result of her seclusion, republicanism temporarily gained strength, but in the latter half of her reign her popularity recovered. Her Golden and Diamond Jubilees were times of public celebration.

Victoria is impressed by Albert's philanthropy which is akin to her own desire to help her subjects. However her loyalty to Melbourne, perceived as a self-seeker, almost causes a constitutional crisis and it is Albert who helps restore her self-confidence. She proposes and they marry, Albert proving himself not only a devoted spouse, prepared to take an assassin's bullet for her, but an agent of much-needed reform, finally endorsed by an admiring Melbourne.

Intelligence Squared’s historical and cultural combat events have been thrilling our audiences with their unique blend of entertainment, information and live performance. Here we present the battle of the queens. Both Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria set their stamp firmly on their era but which was the greater monarch? On one side stood Philippa Gregory, bestselling author of the Tudor Court series of novels. She made the case for Elizabeth I, with widely acclaimed actor Fiona Shaw bringing this most majestic and flirtatious of rulers to life with readings from her speeches and letters. In the other corner was Daisy Goodwin, writer of last autumn’s hit ITV series Victoria, who will argue the case for her heroine. Award-winning star of stage and screen Greta Scacchi revealed the deter...
At the end of the C19 and the beginning of the C20, film was a new emerging technology and, for some reason or other, I'm totally fascinated by those historical figures who just managed to be captured by the new medium -- people of whom we would have no moving record had the innovation developed just a short time later. For me, the sensation is of time travel - as though I have jumped into a tardis or time machine, keyed in a figure of interest and a date, and then journeyed back over the decades. I want to do a series of videos of people of historical interest who were just captured on film and or audio -- people you may not realise were recoded in these new technologies. I hope this venture interests some others of you as much as it does me! The first in this series is a compilation ...

Queen Victoria I on film! In fact, this footage is the oldest film of a royal ever. Filmed at Balmoral Castle on the 3rd October 1896, it shows Queen Victoria riding in the carriage with Tumi, her pomeranian. The next shot is of Tsar Nicholas II and his family, and yet another excited dog. In that shot is the Queen's grand-daughter, Tsarina Alexandra and Tsar Nicholas II; plus her son, the Duke of Connaught and his spouse; and various royal children. A servant at the back appears to have snuck into the film. Naughty! We shall have him burned at the stake at once.

In this final excerpt from "The Young Victoria," the queen, played beautifully by Emily Blunt, picks her handsome suitor Belgium Prince Albert as her first waltz partner at her Coronation Ball to what probably is a Johann Strauss the Elder waltz. This to me is the most perfect waltz scene in a movie with little doubt that here the queen falls in love with her prince. Not long after, they marry and have nine children, suggesting at least Victoria was not so prime and rigid as portrayed in her later years. Albert died at age 42. Available as DVD and streaming on Netflix.

Emily Blunt answers the question: You were allowed access to Queen Victoria's private diaries and letters. How did that help you form the basis for your role? In The Young Victoria, Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) delivers an incredibly compelling performance as Queen Victoria in the turbulent first years of her reign. Rupert Friend (Pride & Prejudice) portrays Prince Albert, the suitor who wins her heart and becomes her partner in one of historys greatest romances. This love story, set amongst all the intrigue of the court, also features Paul Bettany (Iron Man, The Da Vinci Code), Miranda Richardson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Jim Broadbent (The Damned United, The Chronicles of Narnia), Thomas Kretschmann (Valkyrie), and Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Tristan & Isolde). ...

Here I lay a-cryin'
Somethin' is on my mind
It's midnight, I wonder where the nurse can be?
TB's got me, all my friends have thrown me down
TB's got me, and all my friends have thrown me down
But they treated me so nice, when I was able to run
around
Oh, my poor lungs are hurtin' me so
Mmmm, my poor lungs are hurtin' me so
I don't get no peace or comfort, no matter where I go
Lord, my good man don't want me no more
Mmmm, my good man don't want me no more
well I wish I was dead and in the land I'm doomed to go
