STORYLINE
Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated a bomb in a busy street in northeastern Sri Lanka on Monday, killing four members of a family and a navy officer, and adding to fears the country could fall back into civil war.
The bomb in the city of Trincomalee was apparently aimed at a naval foot patrol, but a passing motorised rickshaw took the force of the explosion.
Blood and pieces of flesh littered the road.
The bombing was the latest in recent weeks in a series of attacks that pose the most serious threat yet to a 2002 truce between the government and LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) seeking a separate state in the country''s north and east.
The violence has added urgency to European cease-fire monitors'' efforts to get the government and rebels to resume peace talks aimed a finding a political solution to the conflict, which before the truce had killed 65,000 people.
Police Chief Inspector Senanayake blamed Monday''s attack on the Tamil Tigers.
The bomb was concealed in a bicycle and apparently detonated by remote control, he said.
The civilian victims, all ethnic Tamils, came from the same family, said relatives and hospital officials.
The government cancelled all May Day rallies in Colombo because of fears they could trigger violence, said a police spokesman.
Traditionally, almost all political parties hold May Day rallies on May 1st, followed by huge party meetings.
Relations between the government and the LTTE have sharply deteriorated since a suspected rebel suicide bomber attacked the country''s top military general in Colombo on Tuesday.
The general was seriously injured and 11 people were killed.
The government ordered retaliatory air strikes that killed 12 people and displaced thousands in the northeast.
The LTTE have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese-dominated
government of discrimination.

It was a scene of carnage in Afghanistan, after twin explosions near Kabul Airport, killed at least 60 people and injured dozens more.
The first blast is thought to have been the work of a suicide bomber, passing among the crowds gathered for more than a week at one of the airport's main gates, to try to get flights out of the country.
The second was at a nearby hotel. Along with Afghan civilians, 12 US military personnel were killed
There had been warnings in recent days that an offshoot of the Islamic State group in the region was planning an attack and ISIS-K has claimed it was behind the bombings.
The Pentagon says evacuation flights will continue, despite the threat of more attacks.

The existential threat of nuclear war is no longer a Cold War memory. With nine countries armed with around 15,000 atomic bombs up to 53 times stronger than those dropped in the Second World War, the stakes are arguably higher.
Ahead of the International Day against Nuclear Tests on August 29 2018, we met up with British atomic veterans who were present at test sites in Australia and the Pacific, to find out what it’s like to experience a nuclear bomb explosion up close.
While most people know about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fewer are aware that an additional 2,000 atomic bombs were detonated after World War II and tested on hundreds of thousands of young soldiers to prepare them for nuclear war.

Human Bomb
The Human Bomb is a fictional superhero published by DC Comics. He first appeared in Police Comics #1 (August 1941), and was created by writer and artist Paul Gustavson.
Publication history
The Human Bomb was first published by Quality Comics in the 1940s, and decades later by DC Comics after it acquired Quality's characters. Police Comics #1 also featured the first appearances of Plastic Man and the Phantom Lady, among others.

Roy Lincoln
Quality comics
Roy Lincoln was originally a scientist working with his father on a special explosive chemical called "27-QRX." However, when Nazi spies invaded his lab and killed his father, he resorted to ingesting the chemical to prevent it from falling into their hands. As a result, Lincoln gained the ability to cause explosions in any object he came into contact with, particularly through his hands; the only way to control it was to always wear special asbestos gloves (which were subsequently retconned into "Fibro-wax" gloves after the human health hazards of asbestos were discovered). Donning a containment suit to prevent any accidental explosions, Lincoln became the "Human Bomb," removing his gloves only to expose his explosive powers against Nazi and Japanese enemies, as well as ordinary criminals. He later gained enough control over his powers to be able to remove the containment suit, though the gloves were always necessary.

It was a scene of carnage in Afghanistan, after twin explosions near Kabul Airport, killed at least 60 people and injured dozens more. The first blast is thought to have been the work of a suicide bomber, passing among the crowds gathered for more than a week at one of the airport's main gates, to try to get flights out of the country. Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated a bomb in a busy street in northeastern Sri Lanka on Monday, killing four members of a family and a navy officer, and adding to fears the country could fall back into civil war.
The bomb in the city of Trincomalee was apparently aimed at a naval foot patrol, but a passing motorised rickshaw took the force of the explosion.
Blood and pieces of flesh littered the road.
The bombing was the latest in recent weeks in a series of attacks that pose the most serious threat yet to a 2002 truce between the government and LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) seeking a separate state in the country''s north and east.
The violence has added urgency to European cease-fire monitors'' efforts to get the government and rebels to resume peace talks aimed a finding a political solution to the conflict, which before the truce had killed 65,000 people.
Police Chief Inspector Senanayake blamed Monday''s attack on the Tamil Tigers.
The bomb was concealed in a bicycle and apparently detonated by remote control, he said.
The civilian victims, all ethnic Tamils, came from the same family, said relatives and hospital officials.
The government cancelled all May Day rallies in Colombo because of fears they could trigger violence, said a police spokesman.
Traditionally, almost all political parties hold May Day rallies on May 1st, followed by huge party meetings.
Relations between the government and the LTTE have sharply deteriorated since a suspected rebel suicide bomber attacked the country''s top military general in Colombo on Tuesday.
The general was seriously injured and 11 people were killed.
The government ordered retaliatory air strikes that killed 12 people and displaced thousands in the northeast.
The LTTE have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese-dominated
government of discrimination.

The existential threat of nuclear war is no longer a Cold War memory. With nine countries armed with around 15,000 atomic bombs up to 53 times stronger than those dropped in the Second World War, the stakes are arguably higher.
Ahead of the International Day against Nuclear Tests on August 29 2018, we met up with British atomic veterans who were present at test sites in Australia and the Pacific, to find out what it’s like to experience a nuclear bomb explosion up close.
While most people know about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fewer are aware that an additional 2,000 atomic bombs were detonated after World War II and tested on hundreds of thousands of young soldiers to prepare them for nuclear war.

STORYLINE
Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated a bomb in a busy street in northeastern Sri Lanka on Monday, killing four members of a family and a navy officer, and adding to fears the country could fall back into civil war.
The bomb in the city of Trincomalee was apparently aimed at a naval foot patrol, but a passing motorised rickshaw took the force of the explosion.
Blood and pieces of flesh littered the road.
The bombing was the latest in recent weeks in a series of attacks that pose the most serious threat yet to a 2002 truce between the government and LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) seeking a separate state in the country''s north and east.
The violence has added urgency to European cease-fire monitors'' efforts to get the government and rebels to resume peace talks aimed a finding a political solution to the conflict, which before the truce had killed 65,000 people.
Police Chief Inspector Senanayake blamed Monday''s attack on the Tamil Tigers.
The bomb was concealed in a bicycle and apparently detonated by remote control, he said.
The civilian victims, all ethnic Tamils, came from the same family, said relatives and hospital officials.
The government cancelled all May Day rallies in Colombo because of fears they could trigger violence, said a police spokesman.
Traditionally, almost all political parties hold May Day rallies on May 1st, followed by huge party meetings.
Relations between the government and the LTTE have sharply deteriorated since a suspected rebel suicide bomber attacked the country''s top military general in Colombo on Tuesday.
The general was seriously injured and 11 people were killed.
The government ordered retaliatory air strikes that killed 12 people and displaced thousands in the northeast.
The LTTE have fought the government since 1983 to create a separate state for ethnic minority Tamils, accusing the majority Sinhalese-dominated
government of discrimination.

It was a scene of carnage in Afghanistan, after twin explosions near Kabul Airport, killed at least 60 people and injured dozens more.
The first blast is thought to have been the work of a suicide bomber, passing among the crowds gathered for more than a week at one of the airport's main gates, to try to get flights out of the country.
The second was at a nearby hotel. Along with Afghan civilians, 12 US military personnel were killed
There had been warnings in recent days that an offshoot of the Islamic State group in the region was planning an attack and ISIS-K has claimed it was behind the bombings.
The Pentagon says evacuation flights will continue, despite the threat of more attacks.

Ben has an incredible story. He fulfilled his boyhood dream to be the guy in the big suit walking down the street to defuse the explosive threat. He now works as a Change Manager with one of the largest publishers in the world, The Oxford University Press.

The existential threat of nuclear war is no longer a Cold War memory. With nine countries armed with around 15,000 atomic bombs up to 53 times stronger than those dropped in the Second World War, the stakes are arguably higher.
Ahead of the International Day against Nuclear Tests on August 29 2018, we met up with British atomic veterans who were present at test sites in Australia and the Pacific, to find out what it’s like to experience a nuclear bomb explosion up close.
While most people know about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fewer are aware that an additional 2,000 atomic bombs were detonated after World War II and tested on hundreds of thousands of young soldiers to prepare them for nuclear war.
