Amphibious warfare is a type of offensive military operation that today uses naval ships to project ground and air power onto a hostile or potentially hostile shore at a designated landing beach. Through history the operations were conducted using ship's boats as the primary method of delivering troops to shore. Since the Gallipoli Campaign specialised watercraft were increasingly designed for landing troops, materiel and vehicles, including by landing craft and for insertion of commandos, by fast patrol boats, zodiacs (rigid inflatable boats) and from mini-submersibles.
The term amphibious first emerged in the USA during the 1930s after design of the Landing Vehicle Tracked where the first prototypes were named Alligator and Crocodile, though neither species are amphibian. Amphibious warfare includes operations defined by their type, purpose, scale and means of execution. In the British Empire at the time these were called combined operations which were defined as "...operations where naval, military or air forces in any combination are co-operating with each other, working independently under their respective commanders, but with a common strategic object." All armed forces that employ troops with special training and equipment for conducting landings from naval vessels to shore agree to this definition.
Marines, also known as a marine corps and naval infantry, are an infantry force that specializes in the support of naval and army operations on land and at sea, as well as the execution of their own operations. In the majority of countries, the marine force is part of the navy, but it can also be under the army like the Troupes de marine (French Marines) and Givati Brigade (Israeli Marines), or form an independent armed service branch like the United States Marine Corps and Royal Marines.
Historically, tasks undertaken by marines have included providing protection from war while at sea, reflecting the pressed nature of the ships' company and the risk of mutiny. Other tasks would include boarding of vessels during combat or capture of prize ships and providing manpower for raiding ashore in support of the naval objectives.
With the industrialization of warfare in the 20th century the scale of landing operations increased; this brought with it an increased likelihood of opposition and a need for co-ordination of various military elements. Marine forces evolved to specialize in the skills and capabilities required for amphibious warfare.

Marine is an umbrella term. As an adjective it is usually applicable to things relating to the sea or ocean, such as marine biology, marine ecology and marine geology. In scientific contexts, the term almost always refers exclusively to saltwater environments, although in other contexts (e.g., engineering) it may refer to any (usually navigable) body of water.

Design of new LPD ship class accelerated Design of a new class of amphibious warfare ship is being accelerated by Ingalls Shipbuilding PASCAGOULA, Miss., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Ingalls Shipbuilding is to accelerate the design of a new U.S. Navy's amphibious warfare ship replacement vessel known as LX(R). The new ship, which will replace Harpers Ferry- and Whidbey Island-class dock landing ships, will use the same hull as the LPD 17 class, or San Antonio-class vessels. "This acceleration contract is extremely important for a shipbuilding program that is extremely important to this nation," said Ingalls Shipbuilding President Brian Cuccias. This is part one of a five part documentary series highlighting the development of the Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP) and its use in amphibious operations in WWII.
Created in the post-Korean War era but before the Vietnam War, "Vertical Envelopment" explains the new tactics put in place by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to land troops by helicopter and secure a beachhead in nuclear and non-nuclear warfare scenarios. The film also examines other aspects of amphibious assault in the present and future, including new amphibious warfare ships, the use of VTOL aircraft and guided missiles such as the Regulus, and above all the use of the helicopter and the speed and flexibility it allows, to outflank and outmaneuver the enemy. After WW II, the Marine Corps introduced a new dimension in the mobility of assault troops and logistically resupply with the advent of the helicopter. Vertical envelopment was developed at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico and...

A new specialist centre for amphibious warfare is to be officially opened in Plymouth next week. The Royal Marines' landing craft training squadron is the latest to join Royal Navy colleagues at the new 30 million pound centre in Devonport Dockyard. The MOD says with land based operations in Afghanistan winding down, the new centre would help the marines focus once again on their more traditional role - operating ship to shore.

After more than a decade fighting insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, the US Army is shifting its focus to larger, more complex, and more dangerous global threats. As such, the army conducted Operation Dragon Spear — its largest airborne assault exercise in more than a decade — to test and demonstrate its ability to deliver a significant ground combat force from the air in a major conflict, and then hold whatever it captures. The South Korean Navy believes it can deploy two light aircraft carriers by 2036 and expand its blue-water force to cope with the rapid naval buildups of China and Japan, according to a Navy source. The service has been exploring ways of securing light aircraft carriers based on an interim feasibility study, the source said. "It's a hope," the Navy source said on condition of anonymity. "There are no fixed requirements at the moment, but we've been studying ways of launching light aircraft carriers over the next two decades." Rep. Chung Hee-soo of the ruling Saenuri Party revealed the contents of a program in a feasibility report last week. "To cope with potential maritime disputes with neighboring countries, we need to secure aircraft carriers as soon as possible," Chung, a member of ...
