New York street scenes

New York is a great city for photographers - unlike the car-choked hell of Los Angeles, it's a great walking city and there's always something to catch the eye.
Here's a selection of photos taken during our walks around Manhattan and Brooklyn in the winter of 2008. Most were taken on our Lumix LX3 compact camera - a truly fantastic camera I can't recommend highly enough.
I would have taken more photos with my Nikon D300, but the ruddy thing packed up (again) after just three days and - annoyingly - started working perfectly as soon as we touched down back in England.
Anyhow, here's some of the city details and street scenes that I snapped.
New York's iconic yellow cabs.
A lot of the drivers barely have a clue where anything is once you get out of central Manhattan, but unlike London cabbies, they're as cheap as chips and will take you just about anywhere.
Guitar shop on Rivington, Lower East Side.
Faded advert for something that was 'Crankcase flushed' (a toilet, perhaps?).
The famous statue of Lenin that has stood on the top of an apartment block on East Houston Street since 1994.
Katz Furniture, formally known as M. Katz and Sons, a family-owned retail furniture business on Essex Street that has been trading for over a hundred years.
Curious cup on the Lower East Side.
Atomic fallout shelter. Look around and you'll see quite a few of these survivors from the days of the Cold War.
