They were known as the greatest warriors ever of ancient Greece. Sparta become great by its unique system of laws, made by the famous law-giver Lycurgus. He divided land between the Spartans, creating 10,000 land-slots, meaning at early times when they were all filled Sparta had 10,000 soldiers in its army. His laws made Sparta's glory-time from about 1000 B.C. till about 700 B.C. when his laws, which made Sparta great, were still perfectly followed. Every aspect of Spartan society was geared towards producing the perfect soldier. Infants were inspected at birth and left in the wilderness to die if deformed or sickly. The Spartans became the greatest warriors of ancient Greece by their merciless and brutal training, the Agoge, which is believed to be the hardest training ever to have been in use. The Spartans (with Bettany Hughes )

Bettany Hughes chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever seen, one founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state and the perfect warrior. Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life; homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This is aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persians. But there was bitter rivalry between Sparta and Athens, two cities with totally opposed views of the 'good life'. When war finally came, it raged for decades and split the Greek world until, in a brutal and bloody climax, Sparta finally emerged victorious as the most powerful city-state in Greece. But under King Agesilaus, the dreams of the Spartan utopia come crashing down. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction, until eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to being a destination for Roman tourists who came to view bizarre sado-masochistic rituals.

Sparta (Doric Greek: Σπάρτα, Spártā; Attic Greek: Σπάρτη, Spártē) or Lacedaemon (/ˌlæsəˈdiːmən/; Λακεδαίμων, Lakedaímōn) was a prominent city-state in ancient Greece, situated on the banks of the Eurotas River in Laconia, in south-eastern Peloponnese. Around 650 BC, it rose to become the dominant military land-power in ancient Greece.

Given its military pre-eminence, Sparta was recognized as the overall leader of the combined Greek forces during the Greco-Persian Wars. Between 431 and 404 BC, Sparta was the principal enemy of Athens during the Peloponnesian War, from which it emerged victorious, though at great cost of lives lost. Sparta's defeat by Thebes in the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC ended Sparta's prominent role in Greece. However, it maintained its political independence until the Roman conquest of Greece in 146 BC. It then underwent a long period of decline, especially in the Middle Ages, when many Spartans moved to live in Mystras. Modern Sparta is the capital of the Greek regional unit of Laconia and a center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives.

When a Persian envoy arrives in Sparta offering King Leonidas power over all of Greece if he will only bow to the will of the all powerful Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the strong-willed leader assembles a small army comprised of his empire's best fighters and marches off to battle. Though they have virtually no hope of defeating Xerxes' intimidating battalion, Leonidas' men soldier on, intent on letting it be known they will bow to no man but their king. Meanwhile, back in Sparta, the loyal Queen Gorgo attempts to convince both the skeptical council and the devious Theron (Dominic West) to send more troops despite the fact that many view Leonidas' unsanctioned war march as a serious transgression. As Xerxes' fearsome "immortals" draw near, a few noble Greeks vow to assist the Spartans on the battlefield. Bettany Hughes chronicles the rise and fall of one of the most extreme civilisations the world has ever seen, one founded on discipline, sacrifice and frugality where the onus was on the collective and the goal was to create the perfect state and the perfect warrior. Hughes reveals the secrets and complexities of everyday Spartan life; homosexuality was compulsory, money was outlawed, equality was enforced, weak boys were put to death and women enjoyed a level of social and sexual freedom that was unheard of in the ancient world. It was a nation of fearsome fighters where a glorious death was treasured. This is aptly demonstrated by the kamikaze last stand at Thermopylae, where King Leonidas and his warriors fought with swords, hands and teeth to fend off the Persians. But there was bitter rivalry between Sparta and Athens, two cities with totally opposed views of the 'good life'. When war finally came, it raged for decades and split the Greek world until, in a brutal and bloody climax, Sparta finally emerged victorious as the most powerful city-state in Greece. But under King Agesilaus, the dreams of the Spartan utopia come crashing down. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction, until eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to being a destination for Roman tourists who came to view bizarre sado-masochistic rituals.

Η πόλη επανιδρύθηκε μετά την απελευθέρωση της χώρας το 1834, ύστερα από απόφαση του βασιλιά Όθωνα και σε επίσημη τελετή την 1 Ιανουαρίου 1857 έγινε η εγκαθίδρυση των αρχών από το Μυστρά στη νέα πόλη, που ήταν και η πρώτη στην Ελλάδα που χαράχθηκε με πολεοδομικό σχέδιο. In der Folgezeit entwickelte sich rasch unterhalb der Burg ein kulturelles byzantinisches Zentrum, das von ca. 30.000 Menschen bevölkert wurde. Die Meisten stammten aus dem nahegelegenen Sparta, das sich nicht so leicht verteidigen ließ. Hervorgehoben in der sich spiralförmig nach unten ins Tal windenden Stadt ist der Despotenpalast, der in jüngster Zeit wieder restauriert wird. Er war das größte Repräsentationsgebäude des byzantinischen Reichs außerhalb von Konstantinopel. Eines der Klöster ist noch heute bewohnt. Die Sakralbauten mit ihren teils gut erhaltenen Fresken und die Philosophie als Zentrum der Kultur, festigten den Ruf von Mystras weit über den Peloponnes hinaus. Nachdem bereits 1770 albanische Söldner der Osmanen die Stadt verwüsteten, wurde sie 1825 im griechischen Freiheitskampf so stark zerstört, dass ein Wiederaufbau nicht mehr sinnvoll erschien. But under King Agesilaus, the dreams of the Spartan utopia come crashing down. By setting out to create a perfect society protected by perfect warriors, Sparta made an enemy of change. A collapsing birth rate, too few warriors, rebellious slaves and outdated attitudes to weaponry and warfare combined to sow the seeds of Sparta's destruction, until eventually the once great warrior state was reduced to being a destination for Roman tourists who came to view bizarre sado-masochistic rituals.

In der Folgezeit entwickelte sich rasch unterhalb der Burg ein kulturelles byzantinisches Zentrum, das von ca. 30.000 Menschen bevölkert wurde. Die Meisten stammten aus dem nahegelegenen Sparta, das sich nicht so leicht verteidigen ließ. Hervorgehoben in der sich spiralförmig nach unten ins Tal windenden Stadt ist der Despotenpalast, der in jüngster Zeit wieder restauriert wird. Er war das größte Repräsentationsgebäude des byzantinischen Reichs außerhalb von Konstantinopel. Eines der Klöster ist noch heute bewohnt. Die Sakralbauten mit ihren teils gut erhaltenen Fresken und die Philosophie als Zentrum der Kultur, festigten den Ruf von Mystras weit über den Peloponnes hinaus. Nachdem bereits 1770 albanische Söldner der Osmanen die Stadt verwüsteten, wurde sie 1825 im griechischen Freiheitskampf so stark zerstört, dass ein Wiederaufbau nicht mehr sinnvoll erschien. Die Bewohner siedelten dann wieder im neu errichteten Sparta. Seit 1989 zählt Mystras zu den UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätten. ******** [en.] Mystras - Μυστράς, the former Byzantine town, lies on the Peloponnese, Greece, directly besides Sparta. The fortress was founded in 1249 by Frankish Crusaders, but already in 1259 it was taken by Byzantine troops. Below the castle, the town developed rapidly in the following years to a Byzantine cultural center, inhabited by about 30,000 people. Most were from the nearby Sparta, because the town was not easy to defended. Highlighted in the town which leads in spirals down into the valley, is the despot palace which will be restored in recent times. It was the most representative buildings of the Byzantine Empire outside of Constantinople. One of the monasteries is still inhabited today. The sacred buildings with its well-preserved frescoes and the philosophy as a center of the culture, consolidated the reputation of Mystras far beyond the Peloponnese. In 1770, the Albanian mercenaries Ottomans already devastated the city but in 1825, during the Greek War of Independence, it was destroyed so strongly that a reconstruction seemed no longer sensible. The inhabitants relocated again in the newly constructed Sparta. Since 1989, Mystras belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Η Σπάρτη είναι πόλη της Πελοποννήσου και πρωτεύουσα του νομού Λακωνίας της Ελλάδας. Η σημερινή Σπάρτη είναι χτισμένη νότια από το κέντρο της αρχαίας ομώνυμης πόλης, κοντά στη δεξιά όχθη του ποταμού Ευρώτα. Η πεδιάδα που απλώνεται γύρω της είναι καταπράσινη από ελιές, πορτοκαλιές, λεμονιές, μουριές και άλλα δέντρα. Στα νοτιοδυτικά υψώνεται το όρος Ταΰγετος με τις πανύψηλες κορυφές και την άγρια ομορφιά του. Στα ανατολικά της πόλης βρίσκεται η οροσειρά του Πάρνωνα, που είναι κατάφυτη από έλατα και άλλα δέντρα. Η πόλη επανιδρύθηκε μετά την απελευθέρωση της χώρας το 1834, ύστερα από απόφαση του βασιλιά Όθωνα και σε επίσημη τελετή την 1 Ιανουαρίου 1857 έγινε η εγκαθίδρυση των αρχών από το Μυστρά στη νέα πόλη, που ήταν και η πρώτη στην Ελλάδα που χαράχθηκε με πολεοδομικό σχέδιο. Έχει πλατείς και δεντροφυτεμένους δρόμους, μεγάλες πλατείες, νεοκλασικές οικοδομές και πλούσια ύδρευση. Το ένδοξο παρελθόν της και η κοντινή απόσταση από τον πολυθρύλητο Μυστρά τραβούν την προσοχή πολλών επισκεπτών - τουριστών με προσεγγίσεις κρουαζιερόπλοιων στο Γύθειο. Από την αρχαία Σπάρτη σώζονται λείψανα από τους ναούς της Ορθίας Αρτέμιδος, της Χαλκιοίκου Αθηνάς, του Καρνείου Απόλλωνα, καθώς και θέατρο της ρωμαϊκής εποχής. Αποτελεί το οικονομικό και εμπορικό κέντρο του νομού. Έχει αξιόλογο αρχαιολογικό μουσείο και μουσείο της ελιάς. Είναι η μόνη πόλη πρωτεύουσα νομού της Πελοποννήσου που δε συνδέεται με σιδηροδρομικό δίκτυο (αν και είχε προβλεφθεί τέτοια σύνδεση τον 19ο αιώνα).
