France: Protests and Attacks Against the CIGEO Nuclear Disposal Project in Bure

On Saturday, February 19, in Bure, in the north-east of France, a demo took place in the forest to support the occupation there and then on to the research lab of the planned nuclear waste disposal facility CIGEO. In the process, the ANDRA (French nuclear waste disposal agency) was pushed back more or less symbolically to a section of its illegally constructed wall in the forest. A small action report.

More than 700 people took part in Bure’s February 2017 events, which in the late afternoon resulted in violent protests and massive attacks against the site of the nuclear waste disposal agency ANDRA.

For over a year, the progress of the nuclear waste disposal project CIGEO has been effectively hampered by the resistance of the anti-nuclear movement in Lorraine. In spite of evictions, wall construction and legal attacks and counter-attacks, the forest occupation in the Bois Lejuc and the protest against the apocalyptic-industry-thousand-century-project also extends beyond the region. So there were more or less symbolic expressions of solidarity in other cities – hundreds came to the action day.

Already on Tuesday and Thursday there were nocturnal actions and attacks on the laboratory and its greenwashing department, resulting in considerable damage to the barriers that had been partially replaced by NATO wire rolls. A large bunch of cops prevented people from reaching the buildings in the afternoon, however, large sections of the remaining fence, reinforcements, dead trees and much more were constructed into barricades during a multi-hour field battle. While the cops were attacking and bombarding the demonstrators with tear gas as well as offensive and / or concussion grenades, numerous demonstrators attacked infrastructure and handlers of the nuclear capital decisively and vehemently for two hours. There were several injuries on both sides and at least three arrests.

Hambach, Germany: Coordinated Arson Attacks Against Energy Multinational RWE

In the late hours of 25-11-16, we carried out coordinated arson attacks against the German energy multinational RWE in the vicinity of the Hambach opencast lignite mine. We have delayed this communique until now (11-1-17) for strategic purposes.

After a scout of the area, we split up and set fire to six pumping stations, two electrical transformers, one digger and a substation of the electrical grid.

Pumping stations are key pieces of the mines infrastructure used to lower the water table and prevent the flooding of the mine. They most often resemble a section of exposed pipe and an electrical box surrounded by construction fence. We prised open the electrical boxes using a crowbar and placed simple timed incendiary devices and a bundle of bicycle inner tubes inside to ensure the flames caught nicely.

The incendiary devices were composed of a candle secured to a firelighter cube with a strong rubber band. The candles burnt down slowly, then ignited the firelighters once we were safely away from the area. After smashing a window to gain access, we used the same devices to burn out the cab of the digger.

During the night of January 21-22, four hunting towers in Horbach/Richterrich were sawed down. According to media reports, as many as 30 hunting towers have been cut down in the area surrounding the city of Aachen in the previous six months.

Two Rivers Camp Blocks Trans Pecos Gates

Early this morning, people associated with the Two Rivers Camp blocked Pumpco gates in Alpine, Texas to interfere with the ongoing construction of the Trans Pecos pipeline. A 55 gallon barrel filled with concrete was used to block the gate and then locked to prevent removal. Seven were arrested and five charged with felony dumping of the lockdown device.

NoDAPL Legal Updates

State repression continues unabated with five people facing federal charges regarding alleged October 27 activities. Michael “Rattler” Markus and James “Angry Bird” White are in custody while three remain at large, may they remain forever free.

The roughly 700 arrests in North Dakota continues to slowly winds its way through the courts.

A judge dismissed three misdemeanor cases out of 22 arrests from a September 13 action, citing lack of evidence. This follows three other cases being dismissed from charges stemming from the same day.  For those keeping track at home this is only the fourth set of charges to reach trial, the others resulting in 10 convictions by jury and 7 plea deals.

Meanwhile Sacred Stone has been served with a trespass notice by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Sacred Stone is the first camp established in the NoDAPL struggle, in April, 2016, and sits across the Cannonball river from Oceti Sakowin camp. The Army Corp has earlier issued a February 22 eviction deadline for Oceti Sakowin camp.

The Government Purged Animal Welfare Data. So This Guy Is Publishing It

An Arizona man who has published thousands of animal welfare documents on his website since the government purged the once-public information is pledging to keep digging up data until federal officials reverse course.

Russ Kick, a 47-year-old writer and anthologist, said he immediately sprang into action last week when the U.S. Department of Agriculture suddenly pulled from its website a slew of papers regarding animal welfare at thousands of facilities across the country. Since then, he has made public again more than 10,000 documents, and thousands more are set to hit the web soon.

“We have the right to know what’s going on,” Kick told TIME on Thursday. “The more we know about what’s going on, the better.”

For nearly a year, Kick has been running a website called thememoryhole2.org, where he has re-published information wiped from several agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration and Environmental Protection Agency. His only goal, he said, is to increase transparency and make important government documents more easily available.

Months before the Agriculture Department decided to no longer give the public access to its inspection reports and records of violations and enforcement, Kick said he had an inkling that information would soon disappear. His hunch led him to save nine years’ worth of data from the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

DAPL-funding TD Bank Shut Down in New Haven, CT

On February 14, Valentine’s Day, four members of New Haven Stands with Standing Rock shut down the entrance to TD Bank, a funder of DAPL. Unable to cut though the lock boxes, police let them free after briefly “arresting” them on the spot. The four were charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with the police, and their trial is scheduled for the 23rd.
