27-year-old Brandon Robins was taking a walk around in the Waldo neighborhood, in Kansas City, MO waiting for his child to get out of school when he says a woman drove up to him, took a photo, then said "I got you." The cops arrived and arrested him, and that photo was shared on a Waldo neighborhood Facebook page more than 500 times.
This is a reminder that Olympia GDC will be conducting an 'Information Security for Activists' training on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Olympia Timberlan...d Library. The training will be designed to accomplish the following-
1.) Advise participants of best practices to remain anonymous and to protect data via anonymous browsing and encrypted communication.
2.) Advise participants of best practices to avoid doxxing.
3.) Get participants up and running and familiar with basic operation of encrypted text and voice communication on Signal, anonymous and encrypted online browsing and data storage with Tor and TAILS, and encrypted email via Proton Mail.
To take full advantage of the training people should bring a 4GB or large USB drive, their laptops, and their smart phones. This training will include installation of the tools in question and some basic hands on to get you comfortable with them.
Many people in our communities have been doxxed already. It is likely that online surveillance is already being intensified by hostile law enforcement, private security groups, and hackers affiliated with the far right. This training will give you the tools you need to be much safer in the face of these threats.
