Gian Lorenzo Bernini (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒan loˈrɛntso berˈniːni]; also Gianlorenzo or Giovanni Lorenzo; 7 December 1598 – 28 November 1680) was an Italian sculptor and architect. A major figure in the world of architecture, he was the leading sculptor of his age, credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture. As one scholar has commented, "What Shakespeare is to drama, Bernini may be to sculpture: the first pan-European sculptor whose name is instantaneously identifiable with a particular manner and vision, and whose influence was inordinately powerful..." In addition, he was a painter (mostly small canvases in oil) and a man of the theater: he wrote, directed and acted in plays (mostly Carnival satires), also designing stage sets and theatrical machinery, as well as a wide variety of decorative art objects including lamps, tables, mirrors, and even coaches. As architect and city planner, he designed both secular buildings and churches and chapels, as well as massive works combining both architecture and sculpture, especially elaborate public fountains and funerary monuments and a whole series of temporary structures (in stucco and wood) for funerals and festivals.

Anthony Sigel, Guest Curator, and Conservator of Objects and Sculpture, Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, Harvard Art Museums outlines the research and discoveries made by himself and his fellow curators as part of the preparation for the exhibition "Bernini: Sculpting in Clay." By researching how Bernini sculpted his models, Sigel determines which figures Bernini created himself and which ones were likely created by assistants. His lecture includes his own photographs of the models and detailed descriptions of Bernini's methods. The exhibition Bernini: Sculpting in Clay is on view from October 3, 2012--January 6, 2013 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The exhibition and catalogue are made possible by the Iris & B. (Nápoles, 1598-Roma, 1680) Escultor, arquitecto y pintor italiano.

Francesca Borgo (Harvard University, Department of the History of Art and Architecture) interviews Franco Mormando (Boston College) about his book "Bernini: His Life and His Rome" (University of Chicago Press). Drawing on archival sources, letters, diaries, and a hagiographic account written by Bernini's son (who portrays his father as a paragon of virtue and piety), Mormando leads us through Bernini's many feuds and love affairs, scandals and sins. He sets Bernini's raucous life against a vivid backdrop of Baroque Rome, bustling and wealthy, and peopled by churchmen and bureaucrats, popes and politicians, schemes and secrets.

I hear the wind across the plain
A sound so strong - that calls my name
It's wild like the river - it's warm like the sun
Ya it's here - this is where I belong
Under the starry skies - where eagles have flown
This place is paradise - it's the place I call home
The moon on the mountains
The whisper through the trees
The waves on the water
Let nothing come between this and me
Cuz everything I want - is everything that's here
And when when we're all together - there's nothing to fear
And wherever I wander - the one thing I've learned
It's to here - I will always....always return
