Who's scruffy-looking? Cameras start rolling for new Han Solo film

What do a handsome smuggler, a rapper, the mother of dragons and a giant Finnish basketball player all have in common? The new standalone Star Wars film, of course.

Cast and crew have wrapped up their first day on set in London for the as-yet untitled Han Solo movie, with Disney releasing a photo of some familiar (and not-so-familiar) faces.

Star Wars fans have, understandably, gone into hyperdrive after catching a glimpse of the young Han Solo.

Everyone's favourite scruffy-looking nerf herder is being played by Alden Ehrenreich. With his hair slicked back, many fans have commented that the 27-year-old actor looks strikingly similar to Harrison Ford back in the day.

Also appearing in the set photo is British actor Emilia Clarke, better known as Daenerys Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones. It is not yet known who she is playing, however it is expected she will play Solo's love interest.

Donald Glover also appears in the happy snap, his facial hair primed and ready to assist in bringing iconic character Lando Calrissian back to the big screen.

Interestingly, the actor who plays Han Solo's sidekick Chewbacca - Joonas Suotamo - is the only cast member to appear costume. Suotamo, from Finland, is a basketball player naturally gifted to play a hairy wookie, given he is just over 2 metres tall.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller appeared to be so excited wth production kicking off that they were lost for words.

"Watching such inspired people from all over the world, with such unique voices, come together for the sole purpose of making art, is nothing short of miraculous," the pair said in a statement. "We can't think of anything funny to say, because we just feel really moved, and really lucky."

The new film will explore Han Solo's life prior to the events of the original 1977 Star Wars film.

It is expected to his cinemas on May 25, 2018.
