Paul Benjamin "Ben" Mendelsohn (born 3 April 1969) is an Australian actor, known for his work in the films Animal Kingdom, The Dark Knight Rises, Killing Them Softly, The Place Beyond the Pines, Starred Up, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and Lost River. Mendelsohn currently stars in the Netflix series Bloodline, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award and Golden Globe nomination.

I think Ryan Reynolds is an underrated actor. If you look at his work in films like The Nines, Buried, Smokin' Aces, and The Voices (just to name a few), you see someone that is willing to take risks and do what it takes for the role. While he hasn't yet launched a huge Hollywood franchise (hopefully Deadpool will stick), he always delivers a solid performance. The same goes for Ben Mendelsohn. While most of you will know his work from Derek Cianfrance's The Place Beyond the Pines, he's given fantastic performances as a character actor in numerous roles over the years, and he's now on the new Netflix drama series Bloodline, which means I'm going to have to check it out. mississippi-grind-ryan-reynoldsWhich brings me to writers-directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s gambling pic, Mississip...

Ben Mendelsohn had a long career in Australia before he became famous (though still a bit of a "that guy" for a lot of people) in the U.S. with Animal Kingdom and many roles since. He's one of those actors who is endlessly fascinating to watch. He sat down with David Poland and discussed his life as an actor. Considers Bottom (A Midsummer's Night Dream) the greatest character in theater, a role he played in high school. Supporter of the Mirabel Foundation, a charity to support children orphaned and abandoned by drug addicted parents. Claimed in an interview to have written several books under a pseudonym. Performed a one man play, Mother, as a teenager for his entire school. Trained at the Heidelberg Theater Company. Spent a lot of time in Europe and the United States growing up, returning to Australia for High school.
Lived with Scoot McNairy while filming Killing Them Softly. Seriously injured his back on his last day filming A Map of the Human Heart. Appeared in a PSA with Gia Carides and Paul Gleeson in the 80s set in a nightclub to teach teenagers how to fill out their tax returns. Got into acting after taking a Drama class as he thought it would be easy to pass. Learned of method acting from costar Nina Landis (Prime Time), who suggested he read Uta Hagen's Respect for Acting as a teenager. Trained at the Heidelberg Theater Company.
Accents are always difficult in their way, but as long as you're not throwing an audience off with it, then that's all it should be. 'Animal Kingdom' is a lot of things, but it's not heartwarming. At any period of an actor's life, it's fairly likely that they'll be cast in ways that are reminiscent. That's the way it goes. There's very little different between the way the government operates in America and the way criminals do. 'Animal Kingdom' is a significant comet, and it's cast a tail. It's very hard to see anything post that happening without that. Acting is a bit of a heart and soul exercise with me. It's kind of all I've got.
The Rebellion makes a risky move to steal the plans to the Death Star, setting up the epic saga to follow.
Fassbender is fearless; he's a fearless actor. 'Animal Kingdom' is a lot of things, but it's not heartwarming. There's very little different between the way the government operates in America and the way criminals do. Before 'Animal Kingdom,' I wasn't particularly thought of in villainous roles. I don't believe in the transformation myth, where if you have more success, life changes for you. For me it's a compliment, playing baddie characters. I take it as a compliment.

Fassbender is fearless; he's a fearless actor. Before 'Animal Kingdom,' I wasn't particularly thought of in villainous roles. As an outsider in America, you do see the kind of hypocrisy that's rampant there. You can certainly extend your adolescence. There's people that are very good at extending it indefinitely. $3,000 from a residual cheque was all I made one year. For mine, the villains of the piece were always important. In a traditional sense, that's always an important role.
All cellphones were out during Sia's powerful performance of Breathe Me. Ben Mendelsohn dramatic cinematic on screen performance was mesmerizing!
