3D version of the logo Behind the Scenes We often get asked how it all works at Behind the News so we made this video that runs you through a typical week here. Nathan shows you through all the steps from production to the telecast!

Watch
  • It's a hard life being Mattman, especially when you get trolled.

  • Sarah let her imagination go a little wild when designing the bacteria costume for a story on Antibiotics!

  • I tried to ask this mime artist what she was doing but all I got was silence...

  • AYE AYE Captain! Sarah got her parrot on to tell us about Modern Pirates.

  • When Tash did a report on a special effects make up class she couldn't wait to become a zombie... but 80's style! Really?!

  • It's not a fun party when Nathan shows up, well, when he's dressed as a virus that is.

  • The first moon landing was in 1969. Explaining what technology was like back then is this retro looking Sarah. Just smashing darling!

  • Don't mess with Tash when she's dressed up as an olden days teacher to explain what Corporal Punishment means.

Featured Question
What do you do when you're not working?
Hello, Matt here, I like to play video games and watch movies. Old ones are my favourite! But here's what I think the answers for the others would be:
  • Nathan: I enjoy disco dancing.
  • Sarah: I rescue garden gnomes.
  • Tash: I like to start conversations with animals.
  • Sophia: I like to invent new recipes. My personal favourite is the snail salad!
  • Emma: I am trying to create a new sport to rival lawn bowls. It's called dirt bowls.
  • James: I look after turtles.

(Ask A Question is closed for a little bit - things are just a bit too busy at the moment!)

The BTN reporters: You guys do such a great job! I really enjoy watching your episodes! A question what are rookie reports about? can you do them about anything? thanks!

Moderator: Thanks for the compliments. Yes, Rookie Reporters can be about anything newsworthy. Reports about what's unique about your local area or what people in your local community are doing are always interesting? Maybe you know someone whose reaching national ranks in their sport? Or your school is doing something that other schools aren't? Happy story writing!

  • Jessica :

    Hey Btn!
Just wondering if u could make a bloopers video or something.
    Please reply, taj

Moderator: Howdy, We've started putting a youtube playlist together for that... although we do need to work on putting more stuff on there. Our Youtube account has only just started so it will take time to fill up.

  • Nathan :

    12 Mar 2014 11:40:43am

Have you ever made a mistake while recording? How many times do you have to rehearse your script?

Moderator: Mistakes are a part of life and journalists make them too :) Sometimes it's muddling up our words or forgetting to turn the microphone on. But training, practice and learning from your mistakes makes them less likely to happen. Sometimes we don't get much time to rehearse but we've generally read through it many times while putting it together so we're pretty familiar with what we have to say.

  • Nathan :

    12 Mar 2014 11:28:32am

I watch the videos for class work and really enjoy watching all of them.

  • Lili-Jayne Hass :

    09 Mar 2014 7:41:02pm

hey btn i was wondering if we could give you ideas for polls and things like that. If you say yes then i have a poll 'should schools have a band or quire' because it's fun for kids but the schools have to pay for the instroments and the busses to go to the concerts.

Moderator: Sorry Lili-Jayne, the polls are related to the stories that we are reporting on that week.

    • Lili-Jayne :

      16 Mar 2014 3:53:47pm

cool thanks for answering my question i'll have another for you soon!!! c ya!

  • Lili-Jayne Hass :

    09 Mar 2014 12:18:45pm

Hey I really like your show but I wanted to know how do you choose which story's are the right story's to tell on BTN?

Moderator: Hi Lili-Jayne, We have researchers on the team that look out for stories that relate to our audience. We also have an education advisor that can help determine if a story will be good to show. Mainly though we take a look at the big stories that are in the news and work out what aspects of the story might need further explanation to students.

  • Lili-Jayne Hass :

    09 Mar 2014 12:11:00pm

HEY!!! I'M 10!!! My whole class watches your show and we ask our teachers a lot of questions :) .

    24 Nov 2013 2:49:19pm

Is there such thing as a Behind The News app? If not have you ever thought about making one so it is eaiser to access the programs

Moderator: No there isn't unfortunately. Yes we have thought about it but I'm afraid resources (people, time and money) don't allow us the ability to.

  • horseygirl10 :

    20 Nov 2013 11:08:43am

How do they do green screening?

Moderator: In our Behind the Scenes video (see top of the page) we talk about green screens, you may be interested to watch that. How they actually work is all done with computers and software which basically looks for the special colour (in the case of green screens that colour is green... obviously :) and then makes it transparent so that the video on a layer underneath can show through.

  • Daniela :

    19 Nov 2013 9:13:23pm

If someone has an interesting topic to talk about can they broadcast it on BTN?

Moderator: We would love to see your interesting topic! We have a Rookie Reporter section where we show kids reports that are sent in to us. If you've done one then send it in via the instructions on that page. If you haven't done one yet, make sure you check out the training section to get all the tips and tricks in making your reports really good.

  • Daniela :

    • Tash :

      05 Dec 2013 11:14:50am

I've been at BtN for 4 years.

  • Daniela :

    19 Nov 2013 9:02:28pm

Hi, My name is Daniela and I really like BTN so I was wondering when I grow up.... how can I get involved with BTN?, How Old do I have to be?
Because I really like to report news..... especially on ACTUAL news!! :D By the way im 12 at the moment :) please answer my Question :D

Moderator: Hi Daniela, You can get involved in BtN through our Rookie Reporter section if you'd like!? We also have a training area that will help you do the best reports you can. When you're older, you'll need to choose journalism as career pathway from high school to university. A journalism university degree would then put you in the right place to apply for jobs in the News industry... including BtN!

  • Rosie :

    19 Nov 2013 5:01:04pm

Is it fun to hang out when you are not on air?

    • Tash :

      05 Dec 2013 11:15:47am

Yeah it's fun to hang out with the other reporters away from work. We're like a family here, so it's great we get along :)

  • Georgia :

    19 Nov 2013 3:39:30pm

What is your favourite episode this year ?

    • Tash :

      05 Dec 2013 11:16:19am

My favourite episode was the last one (ep. 35) because I always enjoy the Year in Review. It's good to look back on the stories from the year and remember what's happened around the world and the fun times we've had on BtN.

  • Sam :

    18 Nov 2013 9:44:09pm

Have you ever screwed up when you were recording?

Moderator: Mistakes are a part of life and journalists make them too :) Sometimes it's muddling up your words or forgetting to turn the microphone on. But training, practice and learning from your mistakes makes them less likely to happen.

  • Thura :

    18 Nov 2013 6:26:11pm

    Hi,
Who is your favourite member in One Direction?

    • Tash :

      19 Nov 2013 12:17:18pm

      Umm...no idea! I do have a 1D t-shirt though :P

    • Sophia :

      19 Nov 2013 12:31:14pm

I didn't like One Direction until they came to Australia and I had to go and interview all of their fans. I didn't know what all the fuss was about so I went to see the 1D movie and after watching that, I have to admit, I kind of like them all, they're so funny! I think Louis is the cutes and Harry has the best personality!

    • Sarah :

      19 Nov 2013 12:42:57pm

Harry, because he sort of looks like a young Mick Jagger

    • Emma :

      19 Nov 2013 1:14:35pm

      Definitely Louis!

  • Mehak :

    17 Nov 2013 11:26:48am

If you didn't work at BTN, what would you work as?

Moderator: They are all journalists so they'd probably be working in other parts of the ABC or other media organisations. However, James is studying finance and Sarah geography so they may switch careers later. Sophia wishes she was a vet... but she's allergic to animals :(

    • Sarah :

      19 Nov 2013 12:46:37pm

I had about a million dream jobs when I was a kid: archaeologist, entomologist, doctor, pilot, astronaut. I figured Journalism was a way to do a bit of everything. I'd still like to be an astronaut, though!

  • Mehak :

    17 Nov 2013 11:24:57am

    What are your Hobbies?

Moderator: Hello, see the answer to Minha's question.

  • sarah :

    15 Nov 2013 9:45:50pm

Was your room messy when you were a child?

    • Tash :

      19 Nov 2013 12:15:03pm

I did...until I got sick of my parents leaving a pile of my things in my room. It taught me to keep my room clean!

    • Sophia :

      19 Nov 2013 12:30:39pm

YES. I have always been really into drawing, painting, making things and generally doing as much as possible at one time so my room has always been a bit hazardous for visitors.

    • Emma :

      19 Nov 2013 1:13:55pm

Yep my room was always messy! Not anymore though...

  • JF :

    14 Nov 2013 7:16:31pm

    Who is you favourite singer?

    • Tash :

      19 Nov 2013 12:10:18pm

      JLo

    • Sophia :

      19 Nov 2013 12:29:17pm

That's really tough because I like so many different types of music. My favourites at the moment are Jonsi, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Lana Del Ray (although I have overplayed her a bit lately) and Florence and the Machine.

    • Emma :

      19 Nov 2013 1:12:29pm

At the moment... I think I'd say One Direction!

    • Sarah :

      19 Mar 2014 12:11:03pm

Joni Mitchell. You'll probably have to ask your Grandma who that is :)

  • zara :

    14 Nov 2013 4:40:15pm

hi my name is Zara I am 11 years old I watch behind the news all the time and I always wonder whats your favourite food

    • Tash :

      19 Nov 2013 12:12:57pm

      Filipino Chicken Adobo

    • Sophia :

      19 Nov 2013 12:29:36pm

That's also very difficult because I love almost ALL foods. My friends and family are always astounded by how much I can eat at dinner. I love home made Vietnamese cold rolls made by my bà nôi (grandma). I can always eat nachos with tons of guacamole and I eat gelati almost every day, I actually used to live in Italy and I worked at a gelataria just so I could eat it all day!

    • Sarah :

      19 Nov 2013 12:47:26pm

      Mexican!

    • Emma :

      19 Nov 2013 1:13:02pm

      Anything Mexican!

  • Zoey :

    14 Nov 2013 3:37:21pm

Hi my name is Zoey and our class watches BTN every Friday. We all love it and wanted to know do you have to do any training to be a news reporter?? Thanks Zoey :)xxoo

    • Nathan :

      13 Feb 2014 4:16:12pm

Hi Zoey, the main way to become a reporter is by doing a Journalism or Media degree at Uni. But that's not all! While you're there, make sure you can do as much volunteer work experience as you can - it'll help you get ahead really quickly!

  • Adi :

What is the most naughtiest thing you've done at school ?

I used to sneak out at lunch time with my best friend to buy hot chips!

      I can't say because it's too naughty. I went to an all girls school and I was definitely known for my cheeky behaviour and pranks. Girls still come up to me sometimes and say "Oh I remember YOU! You were the one that...";

How do you make you own show
Because I was seeing how do you do it

Moderator: Hello Dan, We have a Rookie Reporters page which also has a training section with all sorts of tips on how to make your own report. If you end up making a newsworthy report let us know!

Come to belair primary school and learn about are Eco system .

Moderator: Thanks for the invite, I have passed it onto our reporters but we're nearly at the end of the year for BtN so we may not be able to fit anything more in. However, if your school wants to make their own report about what you have there we'd love to put it on our Rookie Reporter page. Also check out the training section for tips on how to make it really good.

    Is it fun presenting BTN?

    • Nathan :

      13 Feb 2014 4:23:13pm

Yes it's brilliant fun! We get to find out interesting things and experience different things every week. I've been presenting BtN for nearly 7 years now - I certainly wouldn't be still here if it wasn't the best job I've ever had! I hope I'm still doing it in another 7 years!

    Dear BTN,
My name is Sarah and I am 11 years old. I am always watching your episodes every week and use it as apart of my reading log at school. I have seen about the rookie reporters and I am creating one at the moment, but I was wondering if you let kids be apart of making BTN episodes. I have seen a few kids that play a role in the stories sometimes but would you let kids work with you for a period of time to help make the BTN's.
    Thank you
    Sarah

Moderator: Hi Sarah. That's great you are working on a Rookie Report! Look forward to seeing it. Kids appear on our reports to act out something and get their point of view. They're very important to making BtN just right for you. We don't, however, have kids actually working here with us on stories. However, we do have university journalism students come in regularly to gain experience in the industry, so if you do pursue a career in Journalism that could be an option to you.

Hi I was wondering if btn was going to create a app for phones. I really enjoy btn and it would be amazing if they had an app that I could keep up to date with the news.
    Thanks

Moderator: It's an idea we are thinking about but the main issue at the moment is resources. Our budget would have to be reconsidered to allow time for someone to make it and think about how we would keep it updated. But yes, something we are aware that both students and teachers would like.

What do you do when you're not working

Moderator: Hello, Matt here, I like to play video games and watch movies. Old ones are my favourite! But here's what I think the answers for the others would be:
    Nathan: I enjoy disco dancing.
    Sarah: I rescue garden gnomes.
Tash: I like to start conversations with animals.
Sophia: I like to invent new recipes. My personal favourite is the snail salad!
Emma: I am trying to create a new sport to rival lawn bowls. It's called dirt bowls.
    James: I look after turtles.

Matt likes to make up imaginary lives for the other reporters!!
I like watching movies, going for walks and playing with my dogs.

Rescuing garden gnomes is pretty important too, though!

How long does it take to produce a story?

Moderator: Hi Jayne, We generally give ourselves a week to source, plan, film and edit a story, however, if a story breaks late we can work really hard to have it done in a day. You can find out more by watching our Behind the Scenes video above.

Describe the difference between traditional & modern map making

Moderator: Actually, we did a story on that very topic: Modern Maps.

Hi. I'm Bryson from Sydney. My question is: when you were a kid did you ever want to be something else other than a reporter? Thanks. Please answer back. BTN is the best news show in the world.

Moderator: One of the questions each reporter has been asked in the above reporter interviews is "What job did you want to do as a kid?". Glad you like the show!

    Hi,
I love watching Behind The News. You guys are always giving me great information. My question is how do you decide what news you will be talking about and how do you choose who is going to be talking about it?

Moderator: Our Behind the Scenes video above will give you some information about this question. Something that isn't mentioned in the video thought is that the stories have to have enough video and of good quality. Because we are a TV show we have to place what you are going to see on the show above everything else - no good trying to say something with no vision to go with it!
