Speech is the vocalized form of human communication. It is based upon the syntactic combination of lexicals and names that are drawn from very large (usually about 1,000 different words) vocabularies. Each spoken word is created out of the phonetic combination of a limited set of vowel and consonant speech sound units. These vocabularies, the syntax which structures them, and their set of speech sound units differ, creating the existence of many thousands of different types of mutually unintelligible human languages. Most human speakers are able to communicate in two or more of them, hence being polyglots. The vocal abilities that enable humans to produce speech also provide humans with the ability to sing.
A gestural form of human communication exists for the deaf in the form of sign language. Speech in some cultures has become the basis of a written language, often one that differs in its vocabulary, syntax and phonetics from its associated spoken one, a situation called diglossia. Speech in addition to its use in communication, it is suggested by some psychologists such as Vygotsky is internally used by mental processes to enhance and organize cognition in the form of an interior monologue.

A Farewell speech or farewell address is a speech given by an individual leaving a position or place. They are often used by public figures such as politicians as a to the preceding career, or as statements delivered by persons relating to reasons for their leaving. The term is often used as a euphemism for "retirement speech", though it is broader in that it may include geographical or even biological conclusion. In the Classics, a term for a dignified and poetic farewell speech is apobaterion (ἀποβατήριον), standing opposed to the epibaterion, the corresponding speech made upon arrival.

A speech of a lifetime and life itself comedically written and presented by Valedictorian Carl Aquino, a 2010 graduate from West Hall High School. He humorously relates the four years of high school to a rubix cube with some music in the background.

I will speak
With all the force of sunrise
You and me
Beyond the reach of their eyes
Showing you the way their
words have always been
Showing you the way they
speak of harmony, harmony, harmony
I will speak
Without the false in their lies
You and me
We hold a speech in our eyes
I will teach you where their flowers grow
Where their midnight air will blow
Do the foolish care? no-one knows
Through their midnight air we'll go
If you find
The sea was always calling
Think of time
Even the waves pray
Showing you the ways of war and all her tenses
Showing you the way to see through their defences
Their defences
Their defences
If you find
The words were always calling
Think of time
Even the knaves pray
I will teach you where their flowers grow
Where their midnight air will blow
Do the foolish care? No-one knows
