The city had been a stronghold of the insurgency since the US-led invasion in 2003, and had already been the scene of US military operation in 2005 and June 2005. A US military spokesman said the latest attack was an joint Iraqi and US operation "to free the region of insurgents and create a safe and secure environment for the people of Tal Afar". An AP Television News camera crew gained access to the battered city as Iraqi troops were searching houses and arresting suspected militants. The same day, a voice-message posted on the Internet -- purporting to be from Al-Qaida's leader in Iraq Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- declared all-out war on Shiite Muslims, Iraqi troops and officials, and any Iraqi it believed had cooperated with the US-led offensive in Tal Afar. The string of bombings continued until about 1600 local time (1900 GMT) with US forces the targets of at least three of the attacks. Two car bombs exploded among civilians in the mainly Shiite neighbourhood of Shula. Another suicide-bomb attack on a US convoy sent a plume of billowing black smoke from Baghdad's Alawi al-Hillah neighbourhood. Witnesses in several areas reported that a second blast would go off in an area as as emergency officials began arriving to tend to an earlier explosion.
