Updated Toyota Kluger arriving here in late February

Fresh faced and with a new eight-speed auto transmission, the 2017 Toyota Kluger seven-seat SUV keeps its 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine but has more power and better economy.

TOYOTA'S revised petrol-powered Kluger large SUV lands late next month with more performance, fresh style and greater convenience.

Available in 2WD or AWD, the seven-seat school run favourite's 3.5-litre V6 petrol motor has adopted direct-injection engine technology, helping boost power to 218kW (up from 201kW) and torque to 350Nm (previously 337Nm) while fuel consumption is down at least 10% across the range, aided by a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

The current Kluger's appetite for unleaded is one of the few negatives the big SUV has (Australians bought nearly 12,000 in 2016), so combined economy figures of from 9.1-litres/100km for the 2WD and 9.5-litres/100km the AWD will be welcome improvements in the 2017 model.

On the specification front the mid-range GXL variants gain an 8-inch audio screen, sat nav, digital radio and a power tailgate alongside an independently operated glass hatch.

The range topping Kluger Grandes score improved safety kit, including rear cross traffic alert and lane departure alert with steering control and sway warning. They also gain front parking sensors and a panoramic view monitor displaying views from four different cameras.

Styling updates include a new front grille: GX and GXL variants finished in silver and the Grande in painted chrome. There are sleeker tail lights with LEDs, while there's more chrome for the Grande on its rear bumper.

The range also sees new alloy wheels (18-inch and 19-inch) and more soft-touch surfaces in the cabins.

No prices for the new model have been announced yet. The current Kluger 2WD starts at $42,190 before on-roads, and the AWD starts from $46,190 before on-roads.
