BOATS were fighting to get to the top fishing spots at the weekend.
In one of those boats was the Fuchs and Siddle family.
"There was a lot of competition, there were quite a few boats out," Rhiannon Fuchs said.
She was fishing about 80 kilometres out from Mackay with her family on Saturday when they struck nannygai gold.
Between them, they reeled in five nannygai, averaging about 15kg each, along with 11 sweetlip, all caught on squid bait.
They bought them home to be tested by some very willing taste testers.
"The little ones are bit small to go out that far yet, but they love creek and beach fishing," Mrs Fuchs said.
Fishing is a family affair in the Fuchs and Siddle households.
"It's in our blood," Mrs Fuchs said.
"Dad and his wife Delys have four grandsons that are already keen to take over the family past-time."
She said they try to get out on the water as much as they can when it's calm enough and their favourite spot is the shipping channel.
"We're just lucky that we live in such a nice part of Queensland that we can take advantage of nice weather," she said.
