Ürümqi (literally "beautiful pasture", from the Dzungar Oirat language) is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in Northwest China. Ürümqi was a major hub on the Silk Road during China's Tang dynasty, and developed its reputation as a leading cultural and commercial center during the Qing dynasty.
With a built-up (or metro) population of 2,988,715 as of 2010 census (6 urban and suburban districts but Dabancheng not yet urbanized) and 3.03 million in 7 urban and suburban districts, Ürümqi is the largest city in China's western interior. Since the 1990s Ürümqi has developed economically and serves as a regional transport node, cultural, and commercial centre.
Although Ürümqi is situated near the northern route of the Silk Road, it is a relatively young city. It was not called Urumqi until the time of the Dzungar Khanate. According to Chinese scholars, during the 22nd year of Emperor Taizong's reign in the Tang dynasty, AD 648, the Tang government set up the town of Luntai in the ancient town seat of Urabo,10 kilometres (6 miles) from the southern suburb of present-day Ürümqi in the Tang dynasty's Protectorate General to Pacify the West which controlled Xinjiang. Ancient Luntai Town was a seat of local government, and collected taxes from the caravans along the northern route of the Silk Road.

Brief history of Uyghurs in Xinjiang (by Sogdia) ** Before Chinese Han Dynasty 200 BC: Central Asia was a region predominately occupied by ancient Persian tribes such as the sedentary Sogdians ( 粟特), Chorasmians (花剌子模) and, the semi-nomadic such as Scythians (斯基泰, 西徐亞, 塞種), and Alans (奄蔡). The ancient sedentary population played an important role in the history of Central Asia. Tajiks, Pashtuns (普什图), Pamiris (塔吉克) and other Persian groups are still present in the region. The ancient Persian language (Dari) is still the official language in Afganistan and in some areas in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Turkic group of people, such as Uyghurs, came to Central Asia very late in history (after 800 AD), much later than Han Chinese did in 200 BC. ** Chinese Han Dynasty in Xinjiang (206...

People in western China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region also celebrated the new year in the capital Urumqi. The festivities come after a tumultuous year, which saw a string of terrorist attacks. Just a day before New Year's Eve, nine terrorist suspects assaulted a public security bureau near the border town of Kashgar. As Han Peng reports, people in Xinjiang are now hoping for a peaceful 2014.

Muslims in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China, came together on Monday to celebrate Eid al-Adha, known as the Corban Festival in China, which is one of the most important Islamic festivals of the year. “Corban” comes from the Arabic word “qurbani,” meaning sacrifice. During the festival, many Muslims travel to Mecca to take part in the Hajj pilgrimage, while others who stay behind slay livestock as a sacrifice to Allah. Our reporter in Urumqi tells us more, where some 100,000 worshippers are gathering at the Yanghang Mosque. Josh goes off the beaten path in Xinjiang, China on his trip from Urumqi to Korla, exploring the gorgeous (but bumpy!) mountain pass. Read more: http://www.farwestchina.com/2016/05/xinjiang-road-trip-highway-216.html There are a number of ways to get from Urumqi to Korla in China's Xinjiang region. You can fly, take a train...or drive. Over the past few years the government has invested heavily into infrastructure, building smooth highways that go around the TianShan mountains to make the trip between the two cities quick and easy. Before this highway, however, drivers had to take the unpaved Highway 216 which climbs over the TianShan instead of around it. It's a shorter route but it takes longer. Thankfully, the scenery more than makes up for the trouble. Watch as Josh takes us on a dr...
