When the Discovery 1 arrived on the market in 1989 it changed everything for Land Rover, bridging the gap between the utilitarian Defender and the luxury Range Rover. we look at how the British brand's flagship family 4x4 has changed through the years and redefined itself ahead of the arrival of Disco 5.
Land Rover's brand new Discovery officially hits the road with 4,000 UK orders already in the bag
But the go-anywhere seven-seater - designed to cope with the rigours of extreme desert and mountain off-roading and the school-run in the urban jungle - is having its global launch in the USA. The US will be one of the biggest export markets for the new Discovery, the fifth generation of the model first launched 27 years.
Is this the first 'real' flying car? Orders open for $400,000 Pal-V that can hit 112mph on land AND in the air (although you won't get it for at least a year)
It has been 50 years since the Jetsons first predicted we'd be flying the family about in airborne cars. And experts say we are tantalisingly close to the dream becoming reality. Pal-V, a two-seat hybrid car and gyrocopter, was recently voted the 'most likely to become a reality' - and today the firm behind it finally opened preorders for the vehicle - although it won't be delivered until the end of 2018.

Make it sparkle: Cleaning tips on how to prepare your car
Missed out on the extremely limited new Ford GT? You could buy Jenson Button's old one instead
This Ford GT first belonged to 2009 F1 World Champion Jenson Button and is just one of four earmarked by to be delivered to VIPs in Europe. With a 5.4-litre supercharged V8 engine, it's a race car for the road with real American muscle - more so than the already sold out 2017 Ford GT with its 3.5-litre Ecoboost V6.
Don't make the same car-buying mistake as De Gea, Rooney and Hazard - choose a car that holds its value like Zlatan's Porsche...
Footballers are some of the most idolised people on the planet, but they're accustomed to making the odd mistake or two. Like Wayne Rooney, who drives a BMW i8 (pictured) that loses 32% of its value in one year. We take a look at 10 Premier League footballers and how much money they lose on the vehicles they buy, then help you avoid making the same error.
The (very clean) factory where dreams are made: Inside the spotless workshop where Bugatti builds its £2million Chiron hypercars
This is the ultimate 'Through the Key Hole' photoshoot for petrol heads. Hypercar maker Bugatti has delivered an exclusive behind the scenes tour of it's ultra-advanced car plant where the Chiron is made. Painstaking hours of work go into building the 261mph cars - and the factory is so clean you could eat your dinner off the floor.
The latest in a line of jaw-dropping Aston Martins has arrived, as the open-top Vanquish S Volante is revealed
Aston Martin's new £200,000-plus convertible uses the same 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12 powerhouse engine as its hard-top sibling. The British car maker has drip fed on information on its new model, suggesting it could be an equal match for the coupe despite having the roof lopped off. Here are the full details.
The birthplace of speed now stands still: Inside the abandoned Bugatti factory where the famous EB110 GT was once built but has since been left to crumble after it closed 20 years ago
Cold, empty and decaying, this abandoned Bugatti factory once built the fastest car in the world. The EB110 GT (inset) was the last car to roll off the production line at Italy's Campogalliano plant in the early 1990s. It could reach speeds of 216 mph and was famously bought by German racer Michael Schumacher in 1994. But sad images now show its once refined, innovative and futuristic production facility falling into disrepair.
This is what £20million worth of the world's best classic cars looks like: The 10 most expensive motors at RM Sotheby's Paris sale revealed
Scoop your chin off the floor and try to stop rubbing your eyes in disbelief - RM Sotheby's first classic car sale of the year is rammed with a bounty of automotive beauty. We feature the most exclusive, including clockwise from top left: Porsche 959 Sport, Ferrari 275GTB, OSCA MT4, Porsche 917 Spyder. Centre: Ferrari F40.
Britain builds a world car: New Honda Civic can be a source of pride in a post Brexit era, says RAY MASSEY
Honda may be Japanese, but the new 10th generation Civic is, in fact, an all-British affair. Not only is this striking new five-seater hatchback built in Swindon for the British market, the plant also supplies the U.S., Europe and even Japan. So, in a post-Brexit era, the Civic should be a source of pride, rolling off a production line on our doorstep.
Walking wounded or killed instantly? Crash test dummies in identical smashes show how safety improvements have helped save 15,000 lives in 20 years
Thatcham Research, the UK's accredited crash testing centre, crashed a 1997 Rover and a modern Honda Jazz to show how manufacturers have raised their game when it comes to safety. Footage of the crashes shows the Rover 100's safety cell was 'severely compromised' while the driver's compartment of the Jazz remained intact. Any occupants would be facing life-changing injury or death after the head-on crash- even though the car was fitted with an airbag. However, anyone who crashed in its modern day equivalent, the Honda Jazz, would walk away with minor bruising.
The stunning nautical-themed Rolls-Royce that is the last ever Phantom VII to be made, as its 14-year run ends
The final Phantom is an extended wheelbase car with a nautical theme created for a 'renowned contemporary Rolls-Royce collector'. With 1930s ocean liners etched into the interior wood panels, sea-coloured paint and hand-cut lambswool carpets mimicking a wake among the features on the car, pictured, send-offs don't get much more flamboyant than this.
Forget snow chains: Inventor creates remote-controlled CLAWS that give tyres extra grip at the press of a button
Czech engineer Peter Gross has created a dome-like contraption that fits over a car's hubcap. When deployed remotely by the driver, claws flick out and grab the tyre, providing extra grip in snow and ice. Mr Gross says he was inspired to invent the device after being forced to fit snow spikes on his car while wearing a business suit and pristine shirt. Details of the product's name or when it will be commercially available were not available.
Planning to drive to France? If you don't have the correct emissions sticker in Paris you could now be fined up to £117
The Crit-Air scheme now in force in Paris requires all vehicles to display a round sticker in the windscreen to confirm which emissions group the vehicle fits into by the colour of the badge. While most British holidaymakers driving in France will give Paris a wide berth, a sizeable number will make a trip into the city - and they will now find they need to sign up to an emissions scheme, or that older cars may even be banned.
Nothing will get you to the slopes faster: Freestyle skier Jon Olsson puts his souped-up Lamborghini with a roof box for his skis up for sale
Just three months after creating what he calls the 'MONSTER Huracan', the former professional winter-sport athlete turned YouTube star has decided to put his ski-ready supercar up for sale. Costing in excess of £300,000 to build, he's asking for £210,000 for the car, which has covered 2,360 miles in total.
The Ford that can outpace a Ferrari: Carmaker finally confirms its new GT supercar has 638bhp and a top speed of 216mph
Ford confirmed the figures for its new GT supercar, pictured, in a long overdue announcement, claiming it'll be quicker than Ferrari's 458 Speciale and McLaren's 675LT. The sold-out car - which has been reserved only for the rich, famous and social influencers and could cost about $500,00, or £400,000 - will be capable of a staggering 216mph flat out. We reveal more details on the new Ford GT.
The very exclusive cars Rolls-Royce built last year: Carmaker reveals seven unique models its bespoke design team created for the super rich
Rolls-Royce built and delivered a total of 4,011 vehicles last year. No two cars leaving its British factory at Goodwood are ever exactly alike. But these seven cars are extraordinarily tailored to the requests of buyers. From tiger-themed armrests to champagne tables in the boot, take a look at some of the surprising requests customers made in the last 12 months.
Now that's an endangered species! Ultra-rare Jaguar becomes world's most expensive E-type as it sells for a record £6MILLION
The E-Type is one of the most iconic sports cars of all time and 72,000 were built between 1961 and 1975. This rare 1963 version (pictured main and inset) is one of just a dozen of Jaguar's legendary 'Lightweight Competition' models - a streamlined version designed to beat Ferraris on the track. The car, which has been driven just 4,000 miles, has been hidden away in the USA for much of the past 20 years but during its heyday it was a success on track, winning the 1963 Australian GT Championship.
Can you guess what Britain's favourite new car colour is? We'll give you a clue - it's been the best seller for four years running...
A record 2.69 million new models were purchased in the UK last year, but can you guess which paint option was most selected? More than half a million vehicles were chosen in this paint scheme in 2016 and car makers are cashing in, turning it from a no-cost option to one that will set you back more money.
Buy the Ferrari that Justin Bieber forgot: Car the singer 'lost' in a hotel car park for three weeks is now up for auction
Pop icon Justin Bieber, inset, was reported to have 'lost' his custom Ferrari 458 for three weeks last year. Now the car, pictured, is up for auction, giving a deep-pocketed fan the opportunity to snap it up. Being sold at the Scottsdale event, in Arizona, on January 21, the 4.5-litre V8 has been treated to wealth of additions, including the unique blue wrap that's been put on the exterior.
ON THE ROAD: NEW CARS AND TESTS
Four reasons why buying and owning a car will be more expensive this year: New car tax rules, Brexit price hikes, and petrol and insurance will hit
If you're planning to buy a new car, get your skates on! Forthcoming changes to car tax and swelling model pricing is going to make new-vehicle ownership that bit more expensive. But the doom-and-gloom verdict isn't just exclusive to those looking to head into showrooms this year - running costs for all vehicle owners are on the increase and could continue to spiral, if experts are right about their predictions.

'The days of someone handing over £250k are long gone': How do you afford a Lamborghini? We meet the salesman... and take one for a test drive
Imagine being 19 and owning a supercar. Over the last five years a significant change has occurred in Lamborghini buyers, says a top dealer, as the new opportunity of social media celebrity, more affordable running costs and tempting finance deals mean the dream is becoming a reality for some. We took a trip to the Lamborghini London showroom to find who's buying and how.
CLASSIC CARS AND AUCTIONS
Buy Magnum P.I's Ferrari! The 308 GTS driven by Tom Selleck in 1980s TV show that's tipped to sell for more than double a standard car at auction
It's time to don your biggest aviator sunglasses, unbutton your best Hawaiian shirt and finely trim your moustache effort because one of Magnum P.I.'s Ferraris is going under the hammer this week. Bonhams expects the vehicle to fetch up to $250,000, or £200,000, with the upper estimate two-and-a-half times the $100,000 or £80,000 valuation that classic car specialist Hagerty puts on an excellent standard Ferrari 308 GTS.
Good riddance... or good investments? Britain's most common cars of the 70s and 80s are now some of the most endangered models on the road
They were the among the most-derided of their eras, but could now be a fantastic investment due to their rarity. Cars such as the Austin Metro, Morris Marina and Ford Sierra, that once dominated Britain's streets and driveways until relatively recently are now on the verge of extinction, according to classic car insurance specialist ClassicLine. The firm has now kickstarted a campaign to save a number of cars that were once responsible for transporting a nation, even if they were mocked by some users.
